Colourful words on mural

Your Black is…: LU Arts and Nadina Ali’s installation to celebrate Black joy

A 30-metre wide mural celebrating Black identity has been installed on the hoardings in front of Sir Arnold Hall created by graphic artist Nadina Ali.

LU Arts collaborated with Nadina Ali to creatively collate experiences and thoughts about being a Black member of staff or student at Loughborough. During the spring term they ran a poster competition which asked people to creatively respond to statements such as ‘I love being Black because...’ and ‘Black joy is…’.

Entries included slogans, illustrations, heartfelt poems and painted collages, all representing powerful imagery of Black joy and identity. From these, LU Arts and Nadina selected three winning entries, each of whom won a cash prize:

  • 1st place - Candis Boateng
  • 2nd place - Zak Bates
  • 3rd place - Festus Adeyemi

Nadina has taken some of the key words from the collection of poems and artwork and incorporated them into her mural design. Nadina’s artwork amplifies these words and through their presentation on the mural, communicates messages of positivity to the wider University community.

The mural will remain in place until September.
