LU Arts is working with Dr Kerri Akiwowo, Senior Lecturer in Textiles (School of Design and Creative Arts), to develop a project that, through the presentation of objects and stories, celebrates, and reflects the many diasporas of our community.
Black staff, postgraduates, Doctoral Researchers and alumni, including those of mixed-Black heritage, are encouraged to submit objects and provide text (up to 300 words) explaining their connection to the object.
The objects, while not limited to the following, might include:
- Textiles
- Clothing
- Products
- Prototypes
- Collections
- Sculptures
- Ceramics
- Painting
- Drawing
- Illustration
- Photography
Objects submitted will be presented within a specially created display structure that will be shown within the Martin Hall Gallery between 16 October – 10 November as part of Black History Month. There will also be a dedicated webpage to view the objects and read the narratives.
Dr Akiwowo said: “African diaspora represents rich and diverse Black cultures, experiences and values embodied by Black or mixed-Black heritage populations who are descended and dispersed worldwide.
“The exhibition is a unique opportunity for Loughborough University to share and showcase a spectrum of objects and stories that elevate different diasporic identities. My hope is the exhibition will create both spectacle and space for flexible knowledge accessible to academy and the public.”
To be considered, please complete the Microsoft Form by Sunday 10 September 2023.
Please note that alumni who are not based at Loughborough University are not able to access the online form. Alumni who would like to take part should email LUArts@lboro.ac.uk.
If selected to take part in the project, you will need to bring your object to the LU Arts office in Martin Hall. You can do so Mondays-Wednesdays, 10am-3pm from the week commencing 18 September. The deadline for dropping off items is Wednesday 4 October 2023. Items can be posted to LU Arts for those who are not on campus. You can find out more by emailing LUArts@lboro.ac.uk.
