How to check in to your in-person teaching sessions using the myLboro app

As part of your time studying at Loughborough, you’ll regularly use the myLboro app, which is your comprehensive digital guide to life at the University. You can use it in a variety of ways, from checking your timetable and accessing your emails to reading more about the support services on offer.

We want to ensure that all students can receive the right support and guidance when you need it, which is why we ask you to use the ‘Attendance Check-in' tile in the app at all of the in-person classes scheduled in your timetable.

Checking in is your way of letting us know that you’re engaging with your studies, and if we notice that you haven’t done so, we’ll likely get in touch to check on your wellbeing and to see if you need some support. We’re also legally obliged to let UKVI (if you’re in receipt of a Tier 4/Student Visa) and Student Loans Company (if you’re in receipt of student finance) know if you’re not meeting attendance requirements, so it’s really important that you keep us up to date by checking in.

Below, you’ll find out more information on how to do this.

How to check in to your lectures and seminars

You’ll need to turn on Geo-location (location services) on your phone to check-in, whilst ensuring the myLboro app has been given permission to access location services. We recommend setting these to ‘only when in use’.

Once you have done this, open the myLboro app and tap on the ‘Attendance Check-in’ tile. Find your current class and tap ‘Check-in’. A full step-by-step guide can be found on the Attendance Webpages. You can check-in to your teaching sessions up to five minutes before the session is due to start, but make sure you are in the classroom when you do so.

What happens next

When you tap ‘Check in’, the location of your device at that precise moment is processed by the app provider and compared to the location of the classroom in your timetable. The provider then informs the University of the distance your device was from the timetabled room, to confirm whether you attended your class. Please note the University only receives information for the exact moment when you press ‘Check in’. We do not store the coordinates of where your device was and we do not receive any location information at any time other than when you press the check-in button.

How do we use the data which is collected?

We use the location data collected to confirm your attendance and engagement to the Student Loans Company (if you have borrowed money for either maintenance or tuition fees) or the UKVI (if you are studying in the UK under the conditions of a Tier 4/Student Visa). We also use this information to ensure that you are engaged with your programme and may contact you if we are concerned that you are not participating in enough teaching sessions and/or we have concerns about your wellbeing.

If you have any issues using the myLboro app, please visit our Troubleshooting webpages or contact IT Services.
