Loughborough academics to host theatre workshop to inform new stage play

English lecturers Dr Catie Gill and Dr Sara Read are hosting a talk on women in civil war England, followed by a practical theatre workshop as part of the development of a new stage play, Brilliana.

The ‘Puritans Under Siege’ workshop will be held at the Palace Theatre, in Newark on 15 July, is for ages 16+, and will be run in two sessions:

Tickets are free but booking is essential.

The play, Brilliana, takes its name from noble woman Lady Harley, who defended her home from a Royalist siege in 1643.

Dr Gill and Dr Read will set the scene with their talk before actors Mark Finbrow and Henri Merriam use abstract devising techniques to capture the atmosphere of a civil war siege.

Gill and Read said: “We are excited to be working with Play Nicely Theatre and Eastern Associationon this drama-based practical workshop and hope this will inspire people to find out more about the English civil war.”
