New sculpture added to University collection

LU Arts are pleased to announce a new sculpture has recently been added to the University’s collection.

Trans by Paul Wager has been added on a permanent loan and was installed last month on the University campus.

It is one of the five, large-scale sculptures made by Paul Wager in the 1990s, and is inspired by the forms, processes, materials and labour struggles related to the heavy industries of North-East England, a place where Paul spent his childhood.

It can be found close to the crossroad of University Road and Margaret Keay Road at the top of the hill.

Paul previously taught sculpture at the University in the 1990s in what was then the School of Art and Design. Prior to that, he worked as an assistant to Lynn Chadwick, of whom also has a sculpture on campus – the renowned The Watchers, located between EHB and Herbert Manzoni.

The other four pieces of Paul’s work – Pulse, Revolution, La Retraite and Strike – can all also be viewed across the University’s grounds.

Dave Bell, Programme Co-ordinator of LU Arts commented: “We are delighted to welcome Trans to campus, and to further the University’s reputation as a home for a number of fascinating and important sculptural works.”

There are more than 20 sculptures located across the campus. Find out more by checking out the LU Arts Google Maps sculpture trail online.
