#WeAreTogether: How Loughborough staff and students have been supporting communities during COVID-19

Universities UK has launched its national #WeAreTogether campaign which highlights the fantastic work done by students and staff to support their communities during COVID-19.

The University’s online magazine, VOLUME, shared stories that demonstrated the wide range of activities being carried out by staff and students, including making PPE, shopping for those who are shielding and carrying out research on many aspects of the pandemic.

The Wolfson School of Mechanical, Electrical and Manufacturing Engineering, the School of Design and Creative Arts, and the Research and Enterprise Office have all been working together to supply the Derbyshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust with face visors.

Working in partnership with engineers at Toyota Manufacturing UK, Loughborough staff are utilising their 3D printing capabilities to produce the frames for the visors and have also helped improve the speed and quality of production. Most of the printing has been completed in the Wolfson Additive Manufacturing labs on campus, and several colleagues, who have access to printers at home, have supported the effort by printing frames to contribute towards production. The collaboration has provided 2,000 visors to Derbyshire NHS Trust.

Current student and alumna, Lauren Jefferis and Olivia Collins, are using their small business, Pickle Illustration, to help the public stay in touch with their loved ones. You may recognise their illustrations from the cups of the beloved coffee shop Bom Bom Patisserie, just off campus.

The pair have designed limited edition postcards and will handwrite the customer’s personalised message and post it on their behalf, as an alternative way for people to reach out and stay in touch.  They are donating 10% of all profits made to the NHS.
