Dr Zheng – from the Wolfson School of Mechanical, Electrical and Manufacturing Engineering – has been named a 2021 IEEE Fellow for his contributions to optimisation and design of multiuser multi-antenna communications.
His work in the field has had long-lasting impact on the development of efficient, robust and secure wireless communications systems, including 5G and beyond. Dr Zheng’s research has inspired many research and development activities in both academia and industry; one optimisation method he proposed in 2012 led the latest satellite broadband standard DVB-S2X to incorporate multi-antenna signal processing as a key enabling technique, and is currently under a live demonstration over a GEO satellite led by the European Space Agency.
He is also one of the most cited researchers in the communications research community, as recognised by Clarivate Analytics in 2019.
IEEE Fellowship is the highest grade of membership available and is recognised by the technical community as a prestigious honour and an important career achievement. Less than 0.1% of voting members are selected for this elevation each year.
Dr Zheng’s fellowship will be effective from January 2021.
Speaking about the accolade, Dr Zheng commented: “I am very pleased to receive this honour recognising my achievements in multiuser multi-antenna technology which I started since my PhD in 2004.
“This is a result of teamwork, and I would like to thank my team members and collaborators for their efforts. I am particularly grateful to the institutional support from the Wolfson School and colleagues across the campus, which has been crucial for providing me with an ideal environment to conduct my research.”
