Sculpture Week 2024

LU Arts is running a series of events to celebrate and raise awareness of our campus sculpture collection.

Throughout sculpture week (29 April to 3 May), a selection of books relating to our sculpture collection will be on display in Pilkington Library. Together with colleagues from the Library, LU Arts have chosen books that shed light on sculptors’ philosophies, contain historic photographs of works on our campus, and provide biographical details on some of the sculptors featured across campus.

On 29 April, there will be an online round-table discussion exploring the life of sculpture in schools, from the commissioning process onwards. With Dawn Glover, Head of Creative Enterprise at St. Peter’s School Huntingdon; Hugo Worthy, Curator of Leicester Gallery, De Montfort University, Leicester; and David Bell, Curator, Loughborough University. There will also be an opportunity for audience questions and contributions.

Flux Inauguration will be held on 1 May to officially welcome the newest sculpture to the Loughborough University sculpture collection. This celebration will feature brief introductions to the work by David Bell, as well as its creators who will discuss the process of making one of the UK’s most ambitious student artworks. The artists will also be on hand throughout the event to answer questions.

Following this event there will be a Hidden Gems Sculpture Tour, departing from Flux at 3pm. Loughborough University's campus is home to over 40 sculptures, many of which are prominently located. Some, however, are a little more off the beaten track. Led by David Bell, this tour will take in some of campus’ lesser-known sculptural gems. If you can’t make the tour, you can follow the sculpture trail on Google Maps.

Later that day, there will also be an online talk from Art UK and Loughborough University, exploring sculptures from our collection. Art Unlocked is an online event series brought to you by Art UK in collaboration with Bloomberg Philanthropies.

All the events are free and open to all.

Throughout the week LU Arts are running an online sculpture quiz. The quiz is open to all with three Love2shop vouchers to win. Entries must be received by 8pm on Friday 3 May 2024.
