Social Media for Researchers – online workshop

Academics are invited to join a new online workshop designed to help them use social media more confidently to promote their research and raise their professional profile.

Taking place on Friday 20 March, 10am–12 noon, Social Media for Researchers is a practical, confidence-building session tailored to today’s fast-moving digital landscape. The workshop will focus on how researchers can use platforms – particularly LinkedIn – to increase visibility, strengthen reputation, and communicate impact more effectively.

Using their own research as a live case study, participants will apply ideas in real time, moving beyond theory to practical action. The session will explore why LinkedIn has become a key platform for researchers, how social media activity aligns with REF and wider institutional priorities, and the benefits for both individuals and universities.

The workshop includes an honest self-audit of current practice, real examples from across the higher education sector, and clear guidance on creating original, engaging content while maintaining academic credibility. Participants will also gain insight into alternative platforms and leave with a simple, sustainable routine for embedding social media into the research cycle.

Spaces for this course are limited – if you would like to request a place, please email Judy Wing at J.L.Wing@lboro.ac.uk
