Posture Check with Duo: Keeping your devices secure

a computer monitor and a padlock

A quick device security check during sign-in is now being carried out for all staff and doctoral researchers using Cisco Duo.

Duo checks that your device is up to date (and meets the required minimum-security standard) by ensuring you have the latest software updates installed before accessing university systems and data.

Posture Check is a new security check built into Cisco Duo, the same service you already use for multi-factor authentication (MFA). No additional software is required; the service has been activated automatically.

When you sign in, whether using a University-managed or personal device, you will now receive a notice from Duo if your device has not applied the latest software updates within 14 days from the vendor’s release date.

If your device is running an outdated software version, you'll see a warning notice on the device which is out of date. This may be in your web browser or in the Duo Mobile app. You’ll initially have the option to skip the request, but it’s important to update your device as soon as possible. Keeping MFA software up-to-date significantly reduces the risk of cyber-attacks.
