Despite the warm weather and the temptation to cool off, deep water sites such as quarries, lakes, and reservoirs pose significant risks.
Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service highlights key hazards of open water, including extremely cold temperatures, hidden currents, underwater debris, and sudden changes in depth. Quarries are not suitable for swimming due to steep drops and unpredictable water quality.
Top water tips to stay safe:
- Never enter water at sites that are private, disused, or marked with warning signs.
- Do not drink alcohol and then go swimming or attempt to jump into water.
- If you see someone in trouble in the water, call 999 immediately and ask for the Fire Service.
- Report trespassing or unsafe behaviour around quarries and other high-risk areas to the authorities.
