The University’s 2025 Three Minute Thesis (3MT®) Grand Final - a highlight of this year’s Summer Showcase for Doctoral Researchers-brought together nine outstanding finalists for a thrilling celebration of research, creativity, and the art of communication.

Developed by the University of Queensland,  3MT® is a dynamic and inspiring competition that challenges doctoral researchers to present their thesis and its significance in just three minutes, using only one static slide, and all for a non-specialist audience. It’s a true test of clarity, impact, and storytelling.

This year, over 90 researchers took part in School-level heats, with the winners advancing to the prestigious University Final coordinated by Enhanced Academic Practice. The result was a showcase of exceptional talent, as finalists distilled years of research into powerful, accessible presentations that captivated the audience.

We’re delighted to announce the winners as follows:

  • Winner: Matthew Putland – “Running Wild: The Benefits of Green Exercise”
(School of Sport, Exercise and Health Sciences)
  • Runner-Up & People’s Choice: Nirosha Ushettige – “Spray, Set, Heal: A Low Carbon Solution for the Repair Industry”
(School of Architecture, Building and Civil Engineering)

Both Matthew and Nirosha will now represent Loughborough at the East Midlands Doctoral Network  Regional Final, and Matthew has been selected as a quarter-finalist in Vitae’s prestigious National 3MT® Competition - a fantastic achievement!

Nirosha commented: "As someone who isn’t a native English speaker and often finds public speaking challenging, taking part in the 3MT was a big step outside my comfort zone. I just gave it my best, and it felt amazing to win the School-level competition. The University final brought me in front of a much wider research audience, and it was incredibly rewarding to have researchers from different fields approach me to talk about my work. The support from my supervisors, staff, peers, and friends meant a lot. I truly believe this is an experience every doctoral student should try - not just to win, but to share why your research matters and to connect beyond your usual academic circle."

Matthew said: "I am so honoured to have won the University’s three-minute thesis competition. I entered the competition to gain experience at presenting my work, so to now be representing Loughborough University at the national quarter finals is incredible. It was so much fun listening to all the presenters and seeing the wide range of research happening at the University. The atmosphere throughout the entire event was so positive and provided a great environment to push myself out of my comfort zone. I would really encourage everyone to enter the 3 competition. It is a really fun way to get your research out there to a wider audience and helps build your own confidence on the way."

This year’s 3MT® final was a true celebration of the power of concise, compelling research communication. A huge thank you to our expert judging panel and congratulations to all the finalists for their outstanding presentations and to Matthew and Nirosha for their well-deserved recognition!
