Take part in Race Equality Week (5-11 February 2024)

The theme for Race Equality Week 2024 is #ListenActChange, which reflects the need for a commitment to action in order to make change. There has been a lot of listening, and discussing, but very little action and even less meaningful change.

Through our Race Equality Charter (REC) and aligned with the principles of Loughborough University’s Race Equality Strategy (LURES), we have declared a specific intention to become an anti-racist organisation. So, we are asking for your support in demonstrating this and making a visible commitment to addressing race inequality in the workplace.

By acting responsibly and authentically, we will help create a more inclusive culture that embraces and celebrates our differences – differences in race, culture, experience, background, and ways of thinking - ensuring those differences are not barriers to progression but are instead seen in a positive light.

Below are some of the ways you can help to make a difference:

  • Lead by example. Take part in the 5-Day challenge and The Big Promise, and talk to your teams and colleagues about it.
  • Encourage others to take part. Share the 5-Day Challenges with your teams and encourage them to take five minutes each day to complete the challenges.
  • Make time to reflect on Race Equality Week as a group. You could arrange a short meeting the following week, to allow teams to discuss how they found the challenges and to share their Big Promise.
  • Involve others. Ask your team if someone would like to appoint themselves as Race Equality Week Champion, to share the 5-Day Challenges and to lead a discussion group.

The 5-Day Challenge and The Big Promise

The 5-Day Challenge consists of five activities, taking five minutes each, over five days. Each day’s challenge asks thought-provoking questions and provides suggested actions that colleagues could take. It is an opportunity to learn, self-reflect, and commit to action that will drive change. Colleagues can increase their awareness of race and racism, empowering them to take action that helps to reduce harm in our organisation.

At the end of the week, participants take part in The Big Promise, choosing from seven meaningful actions to show their personal commitment to driving change. With the Big Promise, what you promise is measurable and can be held accountable.
