Students: Check your vaccination status

As a University student, it’s important to prioritise your health and wellbeing. As part of this, it’s worth checking your vaccination status for a variety of diseases you may be more susceptible to.

Read below to find out more about the MMR and MenACWY vaccines the Campus View Medical Centre at the University recommends if you don’t have a full dose already.

Why should I get the MMR vaccine?

The MMR vaccine protects against three specific diseases: measles, mumps, and rubella.

Measles is an infectious viral disease spread by coughing and sneezing. Without protection, there’s a high chance you’ll be infected if you pass contact with someone who has measles. You’ll likely feel very poorly if infected for 1-2 weeks.

Mumps can also be passed on through close contact with someone infected who is coughing and sneezing and is more likely to occur in young adults who have not had two doses of the MMR vaccine.

Thankfully, Rubella is rare in the UK, however, it is spread similarly to mumps and measles. Whilst it is a mild condition and does not require treatment, it can cause complications for certain individuals such as those who are pregnant.

See your GP if you think you might have any of the following symptoms:

  • Measles: Fever, cold-like symptoms, usually accompanied by a rash, sore eyes or conjunctivitis

  • Mumps: Fever, headache and swollen glands in the face

  • Rubella: Swollen glands, a sore throat, temperature and a rash

Whilst some of these symptoms may seem mild, it’s important to be checked by a health professional to prevent further illness or complications.

If you have never previously had the MMR vaccine or have only had one dose of it, you should contact your GP surgery to arrange to catch up with your outstanding doses. If you have already had one dose of MMR vaccine as a young child then you will only need one further dose, no matter how long ago your first dose was given.

What is the MenACWY vaccine?

As a student, you’re entitled to a free MenACWY vaccination, which helps protect you against common types of meningococcal meningitis and septicaemia. Whilst these conditions are very rare, they are also very serious.

The video below provides a more detailed explanation of the vaccine, meningitis and the symptoms associated with the condition.
