Loughborough University Lecturer recognised at awards ceremony

Professor Patricia Carrillo BSc MSc PhD CEng FICE FCIOB SFHEA was recognised at this year’s Institution of Civil Engineers East Midlands Merit Awards (EMMAs), which took place on Friday 9 June.

The annual awards are presented to those that have delivered some of the best civil engineering projects across the East Midlands region during the last 12 months.

Professor Carrillo, former Associate Dean (Teaching) and Professor of Strategic Management in Construction at Loughborough University, was given the prestigious William Kemp Award. She has been involved in a range of research projects, but in more recent years has focused on the role of knowledge management within construction enterprises, lessons learned from unsuccessful projects, performance management and measurement and the stakeholder involvement in Public Private Partnerships.

She graduated and worked as a civil engineer in Trinidad before winning a British Council scholarship to study for an MSc in Construction Management at Loughborough University.

She began working at the University as a teaching assistant and she completed her PhD whilst working as a lecturer. She is a great source of inspiration to her students, especially for women who make up just 10% of the students in her undergraduate classes.

She lectures on construction management topics to both undergraduate and postgraduate students. Her research encompasses other areas such as knowledge management and lessons learned in construction organisations, PFI governance and digital twins.  She is current Acting Co-Lead of the school’s EDI Committee.

Patricia said: “The award had been kept a secret so when I realised that they were describing my academic career, I was very surprised and emotional. It is an honour to receive an award from such a prestigious body as the Institution of Civil Engineers. I am extremely proud to be part of that institution and it brings me great pleasure in doing my job to educate future Loughborough University’s civil engineers”.

Loughborough University also received a Merit in the Design, Studies or Research category for the work of the Low Carbon Sprayed Concrete (LCSC): Research and Innovation project. This project was delivered by Loughborough University, working with Peaston Concrete Consultancy Limited, ARUP, Ecocem Global and Shotcrete Services. It demonstrated the feasibility of Low Carbon Sprayed Concrete (LCSC) being produced by replacing 70% of CEM1 (cement) with Ground Granulated Blast-furnace Slag (GGBS), whilst still meeting industry specifications. The new process reduced CO2 by 60%, contributing to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals 9, 11 and 12.
