Opportunities to join the Maia committee

The University’s women’s network for staff, known as Maia, is taking applications for a new Academic Co-Chair and Allyship and Advocacy Voice.

Maia wants to ensure that the committee is as diverse and as representative as possible to ensure that the network is able to serve the University community best, and the roles are open to all Maia members.

The Roles

For the role of Academic Co-Chair, responsibilities are as follows:

  • To direct the network’s mission and strategy and advocate for the network at an institutional level
  • To lead the committee and ensure it functions properly to deliver the network’s mission and strategy
  • To ensure the sustainability and suitability of the network’s activities

Co-Chairs can expect to spend an average of 2-3 hours per week on their role over their 18-month term, although this will vary depending on network activity.

Once applications close, the Expressions of Interest will be circulated to Maia members for voting. Each Maia member will have one vote and will also have the option to vote for ‘Reopen Nominations’ if they do not think any candidates are suitable.

If you have any questions specifically about the Co-Chair role, please get in touch with either Abbie Coburn at a.coburn@lboro.ac.uk or Abby Davis (our current Academic Co-Chair) at a.a.i.davis@lboro.ac.uk

For the role of Allyship & Advocacy Voice, responsibilities are as follows:

  • To lead, with support from the Co-Chairs and Operations and Developments Lead, the progression and implementation of the network’s advocacy activities
  • To lead activities that can raise awareness of gender equity matters within the University
  • To act as a point of contact for allies in the space of gender equity at the University

This role may be filled by someone who does not identify as a woman, focusing on the allyship aspects of this role as they prefer.

Within this role, you can expect to spend an average of 1-2 hours per week over the 18-month term, although this will vary depending on network activity. Note that for those outside the RTE job family, and therefore outside the workload allocation model, an agreed 50-150 hours per year is anticipated, depending on the level of group activity. Guidance to inform conversations with line managers in terms of the amount of time required is available.

Once applications close, the Expressions of Interest with be reviewed and decided by a sub-group of the Maia Committee.

If you have any questions about the Allyship and Advocacy Voice role, please contact Meredith Coney (m.r.coney@lboro.ac.uk) or Emily Hansell (e.j.hansell@lboro.ac.uk) who are the current Allyship and Advocacy Voices. They will be continuing in their roles so the new Voice will work alongside them.

In both of these roles you will be supported by the rest of the committee to ensure that you are empowered to fully engage in your role without fear of it having any negative impact on your day job. Maia works as a flexible team, taking into account the varying amount people are able to give and their need to focus elsewhere at various times of the year.

Submit your Expression of Interest. The deadline for submissions is 12pm (noon) on Friday 4 August.

Candidates should include a brief statement explaining why they would like to apply for the role and what they hope to bring to the committee. Please note, you are more than welcome to apply for both roles — please fill out a separate form for each application.

If you would prefer to access a hard copy of the form that can be posted/dropped off to Hazlerigg, please email maia.network@lboro.ac.uk. Colleagues are also welcome to submit their Expression of Interest in a non-written format for accessibility reasons – contact maia.network@lboro.ac.uk to advise of the format.
