Loughborough University’s Catering team is delighted to share it has been recognised for its outstanding work by winning the ‘Social Dining Menu’ category at this year’s U Dine Awards.

The U Dine Awards is a joint initiative between Inside Foodservice and University Hospitality Seminars and recognises and celebrates excellence and innovation across higher education hospitality.

Loughborough University was shortlisted for two awards, the Café Concept Award and the Social Dining Menu Award.

The latter’s criteria was to showcase how our organisation provides a balanced and well-executed social dining menu that not only appeals to students but also provides scope to maximise business opportunities by bringing people together.

In halls, Loughborough has implemented a three-week rotating menu that caters to all dietary requirements and changes on a termly basis. The team’s vision is to provide a choice of food and cuisine which feeds healthy bodies and brains whilst providing varied choices around lifestyle at a good value, all whilst educating people to choose wisely. They have recently adopted extended opening hours to provide more flexibility in meal times too. Additionally, they have supported a variety of events and socials in the halls of residences, including fundraising activities.

One student commented: “With everyone in one block, the hall family spirit is unrivalled; the inclusive atmosphere makes sure you have a great time. With catering being available seven days a week it is a godsend, and eating together in the hall brings everyone closer and is when the best memories are made. You live with people that become your best friends and get to eat every meal with the 300 people you live with, making more friends along the way - I've made friends for life living here!”

Across the wider campus in their food outlets, value for money has remained at the forefront of their thinking, despite food inflation rising significantly. They have also initiated authentic global innovative menu concepts cooked by international chefs that are delicious and varied, catering for multiple tastes and cultures.

Director of Residential, Catering and Domestic Services Gagan Kapoor commented: “Winning this award is a testament to the hard work across the team and the pride they have in serving our University community. Thank you to all our colleagues who have contributed to this amazing achievement.”
