Some are positive, some negative, but all of them have had an impact in shaping the views and acceptance of LGBT+ rights.
Interviewees discuss the representation of LGBT+ people in films and TV, including the problems of stereotyping and queerbaiting, as well as discussing what true representation looks like.
Matt Youngs commented: “There’s a plus there that stands for so many more letters in the LGBT+ acronym and I would like to see those come much more to the fore in film and TV.”
Stevie Ashurst added: “I would love to see more natural inclusion of trans actors and crew members, directors etc.”
The important role TV shows play in breaking the stigma of topics including HIV and AIDS is also mentioned in these videos. ‘It’s A Sin’ and ‘Pose’ are two recent examples of how shows can have a significant impact on society’s understanding of LGBT+ issues.
Interviewees also share memories of favourite characters and shows that inspired them when they were younger and helped them to accept who they are.
