Update: Specialist and Supporting Academic (SSA) Job Family

As a result of feedback received from a number of different sources, including the Staff Experience Survey, a number of activities associated with the Specialist and Supporting Academic (SSA) job family have been established to ensure colleagues are able to thrive in their roles and feel part of an inclusive academic community.

A dedicated working group for this job family has been convened and has agreed on the following:

  • To develop a single, unified job family which combines the existing Research, Teaching and Enterprise (RTE) and Specialist Support Academic (SSA) job families.
  • To extend the current RTE promotion arrangements to add two new tailored pathways: an Education and Student Experience pathway for those focused exclusively on these activities, and a Research and Innovation pathway for colleagues focused exclusively on research and innovation.

Work is currently underway to develop documentation to support these changes. This will include:

  • An academic job family with role descriptors for all applicable grades
  • Promotion criteria for the two pathways outlined above
  • Arrangements to apply for promotion and movement across the pathways.

The University aims to be able to present draft documentation to the University Executive Board in February 2024. Following this, consultation will be held with various stakeholders including relevant University committees, UCU, the Staff Networks, and academic colleagues across Schools. Documents will aim to be completed ahead of University committees held in May/June, with the intention of new arrangements being effective from the next academic year (2024-25).
