As a student, it might be your first time applying for a job. Or you might be unfamiliar with the selection stages often involved in getting a placement or graduate role.
The good news is there are tools to help. The Careers Development Team have launched a new online course on LEARN CA007 on ‘How to Excel in Employer Selection Processes’. This course is available to all students and staff at the University.
Helen Jeffery, a Careers Coach with a background in Learning and Development, headed up the design and development of the course. She said “People learn best by doing and the course contains activities and videos to help embed the advice it contains. Students are busy and as it is online, it can fit around other commitments”.
The course contains activities including comparing CVs to job criteria and listening to different interview answers. It has videos with tips from a recent graduate and shares advice from an employer. Students are encouraged to create actions at the end of each module.
The course has received positive feedback including the following from a student “I liked all the options of examples as sometimes seeing it rather than reading about it gives a longer lasting impression for people like me who are visual learners. I also liked how interactive it was as opposed to just a lot of text, having little activities between was really good.”
The course is accessible to students with a disability. Matt Aldred, Technology Enhanced Learning Officer, provided expertise and advice to ensure this. If you have any queries or require additional support please email Helen directly.
Students who complete the whole course and feedback forms by the 8 January will be in with a chance of winning a £100 Amazon gift voucher. University-branded water bottles can also be won for completing modules.
The course complements the support already available to students to help them apply for roles including careers advice appointments, and interview coaching. Further information is available on the Careers Network website.
Students can also drop-in for quick advice at the two Careers Hubs at the West Park Teaching Hub and Stewart Mason building 11am-3pm, Monday - Friday.
