Celebrate Earth Day with local events

There are three fantastic events in Loughborough that you can get involved in over the coming week to mark Earth Day (22 April).

The aim of Earth Day is to mark the anniversary of the beginning of the modern environmental movement and encourage people to get involved in making changes for a more sustainable world.

Loughborough Students’ Union’s Landscape and Gardening Society (LAGS) is hosting a volunteer day on 21 April. They will meet at 3pm at ‘The Shed’, situated behind Car Park 5 – next to the Edward Herbert Building and the Bridgeman Building. Drop by to see what they get up, how they cultivate their land and grow fruit, vegetables and flowers.

On Saturday 22 April, there will be a Good to Grow event from 3pm-5pm at the community allotment on King George Road (LE11 2PA). Bring food and plants to share and join the discussion on how to grow more local food. This event is run by Transition Loughborough.

Connect with nature by taking part in the Bluebell Walk on 27 April, 12pm-1pm, in Burleigh Woods.  The group will take a gentle stroll around the wood, stopping to learn about the history and ecology of notable features (including the locally famous bluebell display). The walk will be led by University Arborist Rich Fenn Griffin. Book your place.

This year's Earth Day is themed 'Invest in our Planet', and aims to help us to recognise our collective responsibility to create a more sustainable future. The campaign focuses on reframing the conversation so that everyone is aware we can make change if we work together, with one of the ways you can do so being volunteering or engaging with events on campus.

Earth Day falls under the Climate Change and Net Zero strategic theme of the University Strategy and is in support of the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals.
