University launches sustainable travel programme in collaboration with Leicestershire County Council

The University has partnered with Leicestershire County Council’s Choose How You Move team to launch a new pilot programme focusing on sustainable travel.

The Modeshift pilot will be a 12-month programme showcasing how staff can travel to work in a more sustainable manner, through several new schemes in addition to our existing sustainable travel initiatives. This will provide colleagues with a more comprehensive package of benefits to consider as alternatives to driving to campus by themselves.

Some of the new initiatives include:

  • Access to the BetterPoints reward app – Earn points which can then be exchanged for high street vouchers or donated to a chosen charity

  • Regular Dr Bike Sessions – Free safety bike checks, right here on campus

  • An electric bike trial loan scheme

  • Wellbeing Walks

  • Access to the Choose How You Move Carshare platform so you can share journeys across Leicestershire

The University now has a dedicated webpage on the Choose How You Move website where staff can find more information on all the schemes and any related events.

Join us at our launch event

To celebrate this new partnership, there will be an official launch event held on 4 August to coincide with National Cycle to Work Day. On this day we are encouraging as many staff as possible to get on two wheels and cycle to campus; whether you're a seasoned cyclist, an exercise enthusiast, or a complete beginner, grab your bike and saddle up! Cycling is a great way to get fitter, reduce stress levels, save money on commuting costs, and do your bit for the environment.

To support colleagues, we’ll be:

  • Providing free breakfast vouchers (to be collected from the Edward Herbert Building)

  • Holding a photo competition: Simply tag us in a photo on Twitter (@SustainLboro) or Instagram (@sustainablelboro) to be in with a chance of winning one of three cycle accessory bundles.

  • Giving away extra rewards on the BetterPoints app: All Choose How You Move Leicestershire participants will receive a 100 BetterPoints bonus for getting on two wheels and new users will be entered into a prize draw to win a £50 Leicester Gift Card or 50,000 BetterPoints.

Save the date: Upcoming Dr Bike maintenance session

Ensure your bike is ready for Cycle to Work Day by bringing it to the next Dr Bike maintenance session outside the Edward Herbert Building from 11.30am-1.30pm on 28 July. If you’ve not used your bike for a few years or it just needs a little TLC, this is a great opportunity for experts to check it out for free.

This initiative is supporting the University’s commitment to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and contributes to the following SDGs:

  • 3 – Good Health and Wellbeing

  • 11 – Sustainable Cities and Communities

  • 13 – Climate Action
