The impossible

Stop 3

Every part of a woodland has a story to tell because it is shaped by the relationships between the physical and biological elements of an ecosystem.  In an ancient woodland, the interactions involve many thousands of relationships.  For example, tree’s compete with their neighbours for light, water and nutrients.  However, they do not do this alone but enlist the help of fungi in the soils to scavenge the nutrients and water they need.  This important relationship allows trees to seemingly live in some of the most impossible situations.

At this stop we contemplate the miraculous recovery of this Field Maple from a seemingly disastrous predicament. To quote the fictitious character Dr Ian Malcolm (from Jurassic Park) “life finds a way”.
