Use the tabs below to find answers by topic.

How do I apply for accommodation?

The application process depends on your offer type. For full details on how to apply, key dates, and what happens next, please visit our Applying for Accommodation page.

When do applications for halls open?

Application dates vary depending on your offer type and may change from year to year. For the latest information on when applications open and the deadlines that apply to you, please visit our Applying for Accommodation page.

Can I choose which hall I live in?

This depends on your offer type. We recommend following the accommodation application process outlined on our How to Apply page, where you'll find information about selecting your hall preferences and how allocations are made.

Can I choose my room type (e.g. en-suite or catered)?

This depends on your offer type and the application route available to you. Some students can book a room directly through our live booking system, while others will be asked to submit preferences. Popular room types, particularly self-catered en-suite rooms, are in high demand and often book quickly. For more information on the options available to you, please visit our Applying for Accommodation page.

Am I guaranteed a place in halls?

Undergraduate students who choose Loughborough as their firm choice and register by the published deadline are guaranteed a place in halls. For other offer types, eligibility may vary, so we recommend checking the How to Apply page for full details.

What is the likelihood of securing my preferred accommodation?

At Loughborough we like to consider our halls as communities. This requires a balance of gender, course and year in each hall. Our online allocation system is therefore set up to prevent too many students who share the same course or gender from being allocated to the same hall.

Room Reservation (recommended option for Firm choice Undergraduates)

Before you apply - we suggest that you research our Halls of Residence and have a list ready of your preferred room options before you go online to reserve your room. You will be allocated a time slot to log into the system to reserve your room. Each time slot has access to an equal proportion of the room types and halls available. Rooms are reserved on a first come, first served basis. Some room types are limited – please look at ALL options. If your first choice room is not available you can see what other rooms are available to reserve rather than us choose for you.

Room Preference

If Loughborough is not your Firm choice or you miss the room reservation deadline, you can set preferences for accommodation. Your offer will depend on several factors – availability, your preferences options and date of application.

When will I find out which hall I've been allocated?

If you apply through our Book Now live booking system, you’ll find out your hall straight away. If you apply through a preference-based route (such as Art and Design Foundation, Insurance or Clearing), it may take a couple of weeks for us to process allocations. For more information, please see our How to Apply page.

How will I know if my accommodation preference has been received?

We will automatically email you to confirm that your preferences have been received and processed.

What if I am not allocated one of my accommodation preferences?

We recommend that you accept the offer made to you if you definitely wish to live in halls. If you are particularly unhappy with your offer, please contact us to discuss your options.

If after the first few weeks of term you are unhappy with your accommodation, it may be possible for you to transfer to another hall, subject to availability.

What if I apply to Loughborough as an insurance student or through Clearing?

We do our best to help students who apply as an insurance student or through Clearing find accommodation. Where possible we will offer places in halls subject to availability. Please refer to our how to apply page for more information.

Once you have accepted an offer as insurance or through Clearing, you will be able to apply for University accommodation from the date specified on our announcements page.

As a mature student, what are my accommodation options?

If you are a mature student (aged over 21) you can apply to live in halls of residence but you are not automatically allocated a room in a flat with returning students (which may be quieter). Students who would like to be located in an area with fewer first year students are advised to contact us when applying in order to discuss the options available. Alternatively, once you have had your room allocated, it is recommended that you contact us in early September to make any specific requests.

You are also welcome to contact the Hall Warden prior to arrival to introduce yourself. Contact details can be found on our hall pages.

Some mature undergraduates request to be allocated a room in a postgraduate hall, this may be possible however, all postgraduate accommodation is let on a 50 week contract.

It is worth considering opting for a catered hall as this gives you the chance to meet more people in your hall (beyond your block), including the Hall Warden team.

In order for the University to offer the most suitable accommodation, mature students aged over 30 will be invited to apply for accommodation using the room preference option. For more information please see our how to apply pages.

What if I have changed my address since applying for accommodation?

You must let the University Admissions team know of any changes of address. They can be contacted on: +44(0)1509 274403 or by email at admissions@lboro.ac.uk.

What if I'm not at home when my offer of accommodation arrives?

Your accommodation offer will be sent to you by email, therefore it is important that you let us know of any changes to your email address. The email will contain a link so you can accept the offer online. You will need your online username and password to view the offer.

When is move in day?

Move-in day depends on which hall you are allocated to. You can find your specific move-in date by visiting our Moving In page.

Do I need to pay a deposit?

No, we do not require a deposit for our accommodation. Hall fees are typically paid in three termly instalments (usually in October, January and May), which align with when most students receive their maintenance loan from Student Finance England.

What do I need to bring when I move in?

We provide a range of essential items in your accommodation, including bedding basics (such as pillows in most halls), kitchen appliances like a kettle and toaster, cooking equipment, furniture, and cleaning equipment. However, you will still need to bring personal items such as bedding (if not provided), towels, toiletries, and anything that helps make your room feel like home.

For a full and detailed checklist of what is provided, what we recommend bringing, and what you should avoid bringing, please refer to our dedicated What to Pack page.

How do I book an arrival slot?

Please log into your accommodation account to complete our online Living in Halls Induction and book your arrival slot.

How will I know when to arrive?

Your hall arrival date is listed on your accommodation contract. An email will be sent to all students who have completed their post-contractual requirements during September containing final arrival information. You will be asked to book an arrival slot as part of your online induction available from late August. Please see our Moving in page.

Can I just arrive at campus during the arrivals period?

No. You will need to book a time slot prior to arriving. We ask that you arrive at least 10 minutes prior to your allocated arrival slot to ensure a smooth arrival process.

What if I am unable to arrive on the allocated date?

Please let us know so we can ensure that your room is held for you and arrangements are made for you to collect your keys. You are at risk of losing your room if you arrive after the start of term without prior notice.

Can I arrive by car?

Car parking spaces are limited but we have organised time slots, so your arrival can run as smoothly as possible.

You will be allocated a 60-minute slot to empty the car and there will be students on hand to help you. Due to the layout of the accommodation there will be a walk from the car to your room, but there are trolleys for heavier items.

When you arrive at Loughborough look out for the RAC signs on major routes that direct you to the correct entrance. Once you are on campus you will be directed to where you can collect your room keys. Once your have your room keys you will be directed to the dedicated unloading spaces.

Once you have unloaded the car and your time slot has ended, you may be directed to a longer stay car park if required.

Where do I park when arriving?

Each hall will be allocated a specific car park or parking location. There will be signage displayed across campus to assist you in finding your hall. We will also have team members located at each hall location to direct you to a parking space.

What do I need to bring with me to collect my keys?

Please have your arrival pass ready on your phone or printed out. You will need to bring a form of identification with you to collect your ID card such as a passport or driving licence.

What if I just turn up on arrival day without booking a slot?

We have allocated booking slots in order to prepare for your arrival and manage the flow of traffic on campus. If you arrive without a booking slot, you may be asked to wait until an open slot is available.

What happens if I miss my booking slot?

If you miss your time slot, you may be asked to wait until an available slot and directed to a designated car park whilst you wait.

Can I change halls after I've moved in?

The hall you book is the one you will be living in for the duration of your contract. If you are very unhappy, you can submit a transfer request, however this normally only opens around four weeks after the move-in date. For more information, please see our Transfers and Cancellations page.

What is it like living in halls at Loughborough?

Living in halls is a great way to settle into university life, meet new people and feel part of a community from day one. You’ll have your own space to relax and study, with shared social areas where you can get to know your flatmates and take part in hall events. Every hall has its own atmosphere, but all offer support, convenience and a strong student experience. You can also read real student experiences here to get a better feel for life in halls.

Student stories

Will I be allowed to go back into halls in my second year?

Approximately 25% of our rooms in halls are allocated to returning students. You will be given the opportunity to reapply to return in November.

If you are an International student, you will be guaranteed accommodation in your hall for at least two years of your stay at Loughborough, provided you submit your application to return prior to the deadline.

Second year students often prefer to find a house in town with their friends. For off campus accommodation, please check Studentpad for available properties. All our properties listed on Studentpad have been inspected and approved by the University, offering peace of mind.

If you're returning to Loughborough as a postgraduate student, you'll be able to apply for a room in a designated postgraduate hall from February onwards, once your academic place for the following year has been confirmed

What is included in my room?

All rooms are fully furnished to support comfortable student living, including a bed, desk, chair, storage and heating, with access to shared kitchen facilities depending on your accommodation type. Kitchens are equipped with essentials such as a fridge/freezer, kettle, toaster, microwave and cooking facilities.

For more detailed information on what is provided in your specific accommodation type, please see our Your student accommodation page.

How safe are the halls of residence?

Our halls are very safe, with 24/7 security on campus, secure key access for individual rooms, and card access required for blocks and main entrances. In our annual customer satisfaction survey for 2025, 96% of students said they felt safe and secure in their accommodation.

What security measures are in place?

We take student safety and security very seriously. Halls benefit from secure access systems, including key or card-controlled entry to blocks, with additional locks on individual bedrooms. External doors are restricted to residents only, and University staff and contractors carry identification at all times.

For more detailed information on safety procedures and security measures in halls, please see our Your health, safety and security page.

What are shared bathrooms really like?

Shared bathrooms are clean, convenient, and a great way to meet people. They’re cleaned regularly by our housekeeping team, with toilet roll and soap topped up, and are often easier to use than expected as students tend to have different schedules so queuing is rarely an issue. For more information, see our shared bathroom page.

How often are shared bathrooms cleaned?

In University halls, shared bathrooms are cleaned by our housekeeping team at least three times a week. In Unite halls, shared bathrooms are cleaned on a weekly basis. Cleaning schedules may vary depending on your hall, and you will be informed of your specific cleaning day by your Hall Manager.

For more information, please see our Cleaning, waste and recycling page.

How do waste and recycling collections work?

All halls have recycling and waste facilities provided, including bins for general waste, recycling, food waste, and glass. Students are expected to separate and dispose of waste correctly using the bins provided in kitchens and communal areas, with recycling collected regularly across halls.

For more detailed guidance on what can be recycled and how to dispose of waste correctly, please see our Cleaning, waste and recycling page.

Are laundry facilities available in halls?

Yes, all students living in halls have access to on-campus laundry facilities, with washing machines and dryers available across accommodation sites. Machines are operated via an app or card payment, and availability can be checked in advance.

For more information on how to use the facilities and current costs, please see our Laundry facilities page.

How do I receive post and parcels in halls?

Post and parcels are delivered directly to your hall reception or designated mailroom, depending on your accommodation. You’ll be notified when a parcel is ready to collect and will need your student ID to pick it up.

For more detailed information, please see our Post and parcels page.

How do I report a maintenance issue?

If you notice any damage, faults or repairs needed in your accommodation, you should report this to your Hall Manager or hall reception within 24 hours of becoming aware of it. Non-urgent issues can be reported by email, while urgent issues should be reported in person or directly to the Hall Manager or duty team.

For more information, please see our Maintenance faults and repairs page.

What support is available in halls?

Support is always available in halls through both your Hall Management Team for day-to-day issues like maintenance or cleaning, and your Warden or Sub-Warden team for personal support, wellbeing, or out-of-hours concerns. For more info see Support in halls.

How much does accommodation cost?

Accommodation costs vary depending on the hall and room type you choose. For full and up-to-date pricing information, please see our Hall fees and legal information page.

What’s included in rent?

Your rent covers your accommodation along with utilities such as heating, water, electricity and internet access. Most rooms also include essential furnishings like a bed, desk, chair, storage, curtains, and a desk lamp, with shared kitchen equipment provided in halls so you can settle in easily. In catered halls, your meals are also included.

Are bills included (water, heating, electricity)?

Yes - all utilities are included in your accommodation cost, including water, heating, electricity and internet access, so there are no separate bills to pay.

Is contents insurance included?

Yes. All students living in halls are covered by contents insurance through Howden for Students for the duration of their stay. You can view your policy details, confirm your cover, and access claims support online or via the Howden app. For more information, please see our contents insurance page.

Do I need to buy bedding/kitchen items?

No - you don’t need to buy everything from scratch. Most rooms come fully furnished with essentials like a bed, desk, chair, storage, curtains and a desk lamp, and kitchens are equipped with appliances such as a fridge/freezer, kettle, toaster and cooking facilities depending on your hall type.

You’ll just need to bring personal items like bedding, towels, kitchen utensils and crockery, as well as anything you want to make your room feel more comfortable. For full guidance, see our What to pack page.

Are there any extra charges I should expect?

No extra charges are expected beyond your rent.

However, damage to your room or shared areas beyond fair wear and tear may be charged, along with things like lost keys or admin fees for certain requests (e.g. room transfers or contract changes).

How does laundry payment work?

Laundry is paid per use via a mobile app, so there’s no need for cash or coins. Depending on your hall, you’ll use either the Washstation or Circuit Laundry app to check machine availability, start a wash or dry cycle, and pay directly by card through the app.

Can I store my bike?

Yes. All students living in halls have access to secure on-site bike storage. We recommend using a good-quality bike lock, and bicycles should be stored in the designated bike storage areas rather than inside residential buildings. The only exception is for members of the Cycling Club, who may bring their bike into their accommodation provided it is stored in a cycle bag. For further information, please see our dedicated bike storage page.

How far are the halls from my lectures?

Our halls are located across campus, so most students are within walking distance of their lectures. There is also a free campus shuttle bus service running every 10 minutes, making it easy to get around quickly. We don’t recommend choosing a hall based on location alone, as this can limit your options - it’s better to focus on the room type and facilities that suit you best.

How do I get around campus without a car?

Getting around campus is easy without a car thanks to the free, fully electric shuttle bus service. It runs Monday to Friday and connects key locations across campus, including the Students’ Union, Pilkington Library, Wolfson School, and Holywell Park.

The service is frequent and designed to make travelling between lectures, facilities, and accommodation quick and convenient. For more information, see Free campus shuttle bus.

Can I bring a car to university?

Most students do not need a car while studying at Loughborough, as the town and campus are compact and easily accessible by foot or bicycle, with a free campus shuttle bus also available. If you do bring a vehicle, it must be registered with the University, even if you don’t plan to park on campus. Parking permits are not usually issued to first-year students, and unregistered vehicles may be subject to charges. For more information, please see Student Parking.

Can visitors park on campus?

Visitors can park on campus, but the East side is often busy during core hours (08:00–17:00), so it’s recommended that visitors use the West side car parks, particularly Car Park 1 (Multi-Storey) or Holywell Car Park. From there, a free campus shuttle bus runs across campus with regular stops.

There is a short grace period for drop-offs and collections, but after this time visitors must register their parking using one of the available payment or registration options (such as the APCOA app or pay machines). Parking charges may apply if vehicles are not registered or are parked incorrectly.

For full details, see Visitors parking.
