Exceptional travel circumstances

What we mean by exceptional travel circumstances

Exceptional travel circumstances refer to the serious disruption of travel beyond your control which prevent you from attending an examination or other scheduled assessment. For example, road closure due to an accident.

Should you submit a Mitigating Circumstance claim

You should submit a Mitigating Circumstances claim if you have experienced a serious disruption to your travel that was beyond your control and prevented you from attending an examination or other scheduled assessment.

The following are not considered as eligible reasons to submit an MC claim:

  • Travel problems caused by poor time management, personal organisation and/or inability to plan for foreseeable last-minute emergencies
  • Circumstances within your control such as family wedding, holiday and/or cheaper flights

What your Mitigating Circumstances claim for exceptional travel circumstances should include

  • As much detail as possible on your travel circumstance(s) including details on the journey and dates.
  • A full explanation outlining how your circumstance(s) has impacted your academic performance in your assessment(s).
  • Which assessment(s) were impacted by the circumstances outlined in your claim by selecting the relevant components on the online form.
  • If you can provide evidence that will verify and support your claim, you should include this. However, we recognise that it can be challenging to gather evidence for some claims so please submit your claim anyway.
