Network connectivity issues on managed Windows PCs

Staff using a University-managed Windows PC may experience issues when trying to connect to the wired or wireless networks on campus.

What is the nature of the issue?

Staff using a University-managed Windows PC may experience issues when trying to connect to the wired or wireless networks on campus. Affected PCs may become disconnected from the network and unable to reconnect. Please note, this does not affect Macs or mobile devices.

IT Services have been investigating the issue as a priority and have identified a solution.

What do I need to do?

On Campus: All staff experiencing connectivity issues on campus are recommended to connect to Imago Wi-Fi and then to the University VPN

Once connected, your machine needs to remain ‘awake’ and in use for at least an hour, to allow updates behind the scenes. Please note, the updates will not work if the machine goes to sleep during this process. Once confident that the machine has remained active for an hour or more, it should be possible to reconnect to eduroam as normal.

If you are experiencing issues using a machine on-campus that cannot connect to Imago Wi-Fi please contact the IT Service Desk as below.

Remote Working: For any staff member working away from the campus on a University-issued Windows PC, please ensure you connect to the University VPN and continue using your laptop for at least an hour, to ensure that group policies have been updated on your machine before coming back onto campus. This should avoid any issues connecting as normal when you return to campus.

When are things expected to be fully restored?

IT Services have resolved the underlying issue but it is possible that problems may occur with PCs that have not updated. If you experience issues or unexpected behaviour, please follow the steps above or contact the Service Desk should problems persist.
