How to connect my managed University device to the VPN

The VPN service, allows staff and students secure access to University resources from off-campus by using the Cisco Secure Client service.

When connected to the VPN you are bound by the University's IT Acceptable Use Policy. Please remember to disconnect when you are finished.

Step 1: Start the Client

Click on the Windows Start button located in the bottom left of your screen. You can either type Cisco Secure Client or scroll down the list of installed applications

Step 2: Connect and enter username and password

The VPN address (sdsvpn.lboro.ac.uk) should be automatically filled in. After clicking on "Connect" enter your Lboro username and password in the pop up prompt.

  • You will then receive a prompt from DUO and need to 'Approve' the request
  • The VPN client should continue to connect
  • For further information on multi-factor authentication please see the MFA page
DUO - Multi-Factor Authentication

Step 3: VPN is Connected

Once the connection has been made, the dialogue box will minimise to the System Tray.

All of your Internet traffic goes through the VPN to Loughborough. This ensures that you can access Internet based resources such as journals and databases which could otherwise be restricted to on-campus use only.

As such, please disconnect from the VPN when you do not need it and remember that when connected to the VPN you are bound by the University's IT Acceptable Use Policies.

Step 4: Disconnecting from the VPN

To disconnect, right click the VPN icon in the System Tray and select Quit from the pop-up menu.

Note: If you click the icon, the client window will re-open with a "Disconnect" button. If you click this it does disconnect, but the application still exists in the System Tray, and you must still right-click and select "Quit" from the pop-up menu to close the application fully.
