Our master's in environmental monitoring, research and management focuses on the practical skills required for successful and sustainable management through field, laboratory and analytical work.

The programme focuses on the dynamic nature of biological and physical environmental systems and teaches the practical and analytical techniques that science, government and industry increasingly need to assess and manage dynamic environmental systems. There is an emphasis on the practical challenge of measuring, analysing and evaluating dynamic environmental data for environmental problem solving and management purposes. It is formulated around our fundamental belief that environmental problem solving and management must be based on asking the right questions, collecting the correct data, analysing it in an appropriate way and evaluating it in an applied context.

Geography and Environment is located inside a state-of-the-art research and teaching facility, complete with a river science laboratory, geospatial laboratory, and several meteorological and hydrological field stations. The campus also has a 16-hectare research forest, comprised of ancient and semi-natural woodland.

Our Environmental Monitoring, Research and Management MSc is designed to help you gain a sound theoretical and practical understanding of environmental processes and systems.

In each module you will develop your theoretical understanding, learn new skills and practice new techniques. The relative importance of the different elements will vary between modules but all modules will have a significant practical component. Some laboratory work will rely on prior collection of samples in the field and in turn, some analysis will rely on data generated in a laboratory. The dissertation module will begin with a series of workshops that distil what has been learned so far and facilitate the development of dissertation proposals.

Compulsory

The aims of this module are for the student to:

  • acquire an understanding of the temporal variability of lake ecosystems over a range of timescales;
  • acquire the necessary skills to be able to undertake environmentally relevant monitoring and surveying of lake ecosystems;
  • develop the ability to evaluate critically a range of physio-chemical limnological data;
  • become aware of the importance of temporal variability for lake management.

The aim of this module is to enable students to:

  • acquire an understanding of the hands-on fundamentals of GIS;
  • apply GIS techniques to analyse environmental data, generate and present useful information and support decision making processes;
  • appreciate and explain the key benefits and limitations associated with the use of GIS and its underpinning data.

The aim of this module is to develop knowledge, understanding and skills required to undertake hydrological and meteorological measurements, and to evaluate measurement and monitoring practices and policies for a changing climate.

The aims of this module are for the student to:

  • acquire an understanding of the dynamic linkages between fluvial sediment transport, river hydraulics and river ecology;
  • obtain the theoretical understanding and practical training necessary to make measurements and/or estimates of key geomorphological and ecological characteristics;
  • gain the appropriate skills to design and execute research programmes in fluvial hydromorphology and river ecology;
  • develop the ability to quantitatively analyse and critically evaluate geomorphological and ecological data from rivers;
  • become trained in the application of techniques appropriate for the solution of practical problems in river management.

Compulsory

Environmental management has traditionally made use of anecdotal evidence and prior experience to inform management interventions. The shortcomings of this approach, due to the inherent unreliability of this evidence,can result in poor quality decision-making.
In this module students will study the research approaches used to evaluate the effectiveness of management interventions. The use of this research-base by environmental management practitioners will be considered in the context of 'evidence-based conservation'. The practicalities of designing and running conservation management experiments will be studied through a field visit to a long-term ecological experiment.

The aims of this module are to introduce students to mathematical and numerical modelling in (i) the simulation of natural hazards and (ii) the application of this in geospatial models of risk. It will provide an opportunity for the student to obtain an understanding of the benefits and limitations of modelling methodologies.

Dr Richard Hodgkins

Programme Leader & Senior Lecturer in Physical Geography

Richard is a Senior Lecturer in Physical Geography with over 20 years’ teaching experience, and has published over 40 peer-reviewed papers on aspects of both Arctic and Antarctic environments.

Dr Kate Mathers

UKRI Future Leaders Fellow

Kate is a freshwater scientist whose research sits on the interface of aquatic ecology, hydrology and fluvial geomorphology. Her teaching explores aquatic ecology and sedimentology.

Professor John Anderson

Professor of Physical Geography

John's teaching examines the role of lakes in the terrestrial carbon cycle. He uses lakes to address anthropogenic disruption of global biogeochemical cycles, especially carbon, phosphorus and nitrogen.

Guy Tallentire

University Teacher in Geographical Information Systems

Guy teaches broadly across physical geography, in particular modules that include Geographical Information Systems and remote sensing. His current research is focussed on the Arctic, a region which is warming up to six times faster than anywhere else on the planet.

Professor Joanna Bullard

Professor of Physical Geography

Jo’s research focuses on aeolian processes, landforms and sediments in both dryland and coastal environments. It contributes to debates concerning the responses of arid and coastal aeolian systems to climate fluctuations and the potential importance of aeolian processes in global biogeochemical cycl

Dr John Hilliar

Reader in Natural Hazard Risks

John is a geologist and physical geographer who uses numerical methods to model both the physics and statistics of active and Quaternary Earth processes. His teaching is mainly in the area of natural hazards, risk and catastrophe modelling.

Professor Rob Wilby

Professor of Hydroclimatic Modelling

Rob's research is about the management of present and projected climate risks to freshwater environments and urban areas. His teaching examines the relationship between the climate system and society

Professor Paul Wood

Professor of Ecohydrology and Physical Geography

Paul is an ecohydrologist with research interests in environmental flows. His teaching explores ecohydrology with a focus river ecology, how communities respond to environmental change and the conservation and management of freshwater habitats.
