Standard English language requirements

The standard University IELTS English language requirements is 6.5 overall with 6.0 in each individual element (reading, writing, listening and speaking). Some departments may require higher levels English language (see below in Approved Qualifications).

For those students who do not meet our IELTS requirement, Loughborough University offers a number of pre-sessional English language programmes.

All applicants for admission to Loughborough University must have a qualification in English Language before they can be admitted to any course or programme, whether their first language is English or not.  Please read this information carefully.

Approved Qualifications (below) lists the main English language qualifications which are acceptable to the University for admission purposes.

Please note that the "Global English Language Qualifications" gives guidance on the minimum entry levels for the University.  Some Schools/Departments may ask for a higher standard of English qualifications, as is further detailed in the "Approved Qualifications" section.

For Research Degrees, some Schools/Departments may ask for a higher standard of English language qualifications due to the nature of the research work involved.  Details will be included in your offer letter if this applies.

Generally the English Language test should have been taken within the previous five years, but where the test is older, evidence of continuing use of English, whether in the workplace or elsewhere, in the intervening period may be required.

UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) Secure English Language Tests (SELTs)

Following changes made by the UKVI to the list of Secure English Language Tests (SELTs) from 6 April 2015, students who are being admitted onto the following courses must have a UKVI IELTS SELT issued by an approved IELTS test centre.

  • Art and Design Foundation Studies
  • English Language Pre-sessional Courses A, B, C and D

A list of the test centres which offer the IELTS SELT can be found on the UKVI website
