Professor Albert Cherns Memorial Prize: Communication and Media

Awarded annually to the student achieving the highest mark in module CXC399. The prize takes the form of a certificate and a £50 Amazon voucher. The prize may be awarded jointly and shared between prize winners where more than one student received the same highest mark.

Professor Cherns was the founding Head of the Department of Social Sciences at Loughborough University and the prizes are presented each year at a reception held for graduates and their guests following the summer degree ceremony.

Communication, Media, Criminology, Sociology and Social Policy Studies Postgraduate Dissertation Prizes

Amazon vouchers to the value of £50 to be awarded to the top four students achieving the highest dissertation marks across all of the postgraduate MA taught programmes, and the top individual student achieving the highest dissertation mark across the postgraduate MSc taught programmes in Communication and Media and Criminology, Sociology and Social Policy.

The Barbara Bagilhole Memorial Award in Equality and Diversity

The Barbara Bagilhole Memorial Award in Equality and Diversity is a School-wide Prize.  There are two prize categories; Best Student Paper and Best Other Academic Coursework in Equality and Diversity.  The winning entries will each receive a prize to the value of £100. These prizes are open to all taught SSH students. 

Students can self-nominate or be nominated by a member of staff. The nominations will be judged by a prize awarding panel consisting of academic staff drawn from across the School.

English Prize

A prize to the value of £100 awarded annually to the student producing the most outstanding work in their final year on single and joint honours programmes in English.

Publishing Prize

A prize to the value of £150 awarded annually to the student producing the most outstanding work in their final year on the Publishing and English programme.

Travelling Exhibition

To be awarded to the student with the most outstanding performance in Part B English programmes, in the view of the programme board. The prize is to be used to defray costs incurred when travelling to pursue an academic interest.

Ernest Frost Prize

A prize of £150 is awarded annually to the final year student who submits the best original work of poetry, prose or drama.

Ernest Frost was educated internationally, in Italy and England, in a variety of schools, and after the Second World War attended a training college for teachers. Before coming to Loughborough, he taught successfully at several schools in London and the Home Counties. He also took a great deal of pleasure in teaching literature to adults. He was Lecturer and then Principal Lecturer in the Loughborough College of Education from 1963, and with the remainder of his Department in due course joined the University. He published poetry and six novels, three of which have been Book Society choices. In 1980, he was awarded the degree of Master of Arts, honoris causa by Loughborough University.

Richard and Margaret Lawton Prize

A prize to the value of £100 within Geography and Environment is awarded to the best final-year student in Geography (including those taking joint honours programmes).

In 1988, Professor and Mrs Lawton (Professor Lawton was an External Professor in the Department at the time) generously offered to fund this prize.

LU Arts Cultural Geography Prize

A prize of £25 to be awarded to the student with the highest overall mark in module GYB113 Cultural Spaces and Digital Landscapes.

The Bell Dissertation Prize

A prize to the value of £100 to be awarded annually to the Part C student who obtains the highest mark for a human geography dissertation in module GYC400 or GYC500. The prize may be awarded jointly and shared between prize winners where more than one student receives the highest mark.

The Reid Dissertation Prize

A prize to the value of £100 to be awarded annually to the Part C student who obtains the highest mark for a physical geography dissertation in module GYC400 or GYC500. The prize may be awarded jointly and shared between prize winners where more than one student receives the highest mark.

The Postgraduate Dissertation Prize for International, Financial and Political Relations

A prize to the value of £50 to be awarded annual to the MSc International, Financial and Political Relations student who obtains the highest mark in the module GYP600. The prize may be awarded jointly and shared between prize winners where more than one student receives the highest mark.

The Postgraduate Dissertation Prize for Environmental Monitoring, Research and Management

A prize to the value of £50 to be awarded annually to the student who obtains the highest mark in the dissertation module (GYP500, GYP501, GYP502). The prize may be awarded jointly and shared between prize winners where more than one student receives the highest mark.

The Postgraduate Dissertation Prize for Climate Change Programmes

A prize to the value of £50 to be awarded annually to the student who achieves the highest mark in either of modules GYP800 and GYP900. The prize may be awarded jointly and shared between prize winners where more than one student fits this criterion.

The STEER Prize for Excellence in Energy Modelling

A prize to the value of £50 to be awarded annually to the student who demonstrates the best performance across modules GYP052 and GYP054. The judging criteria will be the student with the highest average across the two named modules. The prize may be awarded jointly and shared between prize winners where more than one student fits this criterion.

International Relations, Politics and History Dissertation Prize

Prizes to the value of £100, £75 and £50 will be awarded to the students obtaining the highest 3 marks on the final year dissertation module EUC800.

John Waller Prize for the Dissertation in History

A prize to the value of £250 will be awarded to one undergraduate student with the highest mark in a history dissertation.
