Dean of School Prize for best performance on an undergraduate programme

A prize to the value of £500, a plaque and a certificate awarded to the final year student for the best performance on an undergraduate programme in the view of the programme boards. 

British Psychological Society Undergraduate Award

A prize of a book, commemorative certificate and a year's free membership, to be awarded to the student with the highest overall mark in the final year of all of the Psychology at Loughborough Undergraduate Programmes.

 

Project Prize - Sport Science Coaching and Physical Education

A prize to the value of £50, to be awarded to the final-year student with the highest dissertation mark on the Sport Science Coaching and Physical Education programme.

Prize for Academic Excellence - Sport Science Coaching and Physical Education (Alan Guy Memorial Prize)

A prize to the value of £100, plus a plaque and a certificate, to be awarded to the student with the highest overall mark in the final year of the BSc Sport Science, Coaching and Physical Education programme.

Alan Guy was a senior member of the School (previously named the Department of Physical Education, Sports Science & Recreation Management) first in the College of Education and later in the University. He died suddenly at work in January 1988. He had been at Loughborough for twenty-one years. Alan Guy made a major national contribution to the establishment of degree programmes in Physical Education and Sports Science and to the development of the Physical Education profession through his work on the preparation of teachers and his contribution to national and international committees. He was a past chairman of the British Universities Physical Education Association.

Project Prize - Human Biology programme (Dr Nick Norgan Memorial Prize)

A prize to the value of £50, to be awarded to the final-year student on the BSc Human Biology programme with the highest dissertation grade. If more than one student receives the highest dissertation grade, the prize will be shared.

Dr. Norgan was reader in Human Biology in the Department of Human Sciences until his death. This prize recognises outstanding performance by a Human Biology student on their third year dissertation. Dr. Norgan enjoyed supervising many cohorts of Human Biology students through their dissertations and the prize awards skills that Dr. Norgan enjoyed fostering in such students.

A prize to the value of £100, plus a plaque and a certificate, to be awarded to the student with the highest overall mark in the final year of the Human Biology undergraduate programme.

A prize to the value of £100, plus a plaque and a certificate, to be awarded to the student with the highest overall mark in the final year of the BSc Sport and Exercise Science programme.

Prize for Academic Excellence - Sport Management programme (Fred Harrison Memorial Prize)

A prize to the value of £100, plus a plaque and a certificate, to be awarded to the student with the highest overall mark (Parts B & C) in the Sport Management programme.

Fred Harrison (1932-2012), formerly Senior Lecturer in Recreation Management at Loughborough University, passed away in 2012.  Fred was instrumental in introducing undergraduate programmes in Recreation Management (now renamed Sports Management) at Loughborough and was Programme Director for the MSc in Recreation Management for a number of years; at the time this was the first course of its kind in the United Kingdom.  Fred Harrison’s family have kindly donated this legacy to the University in his memory.

Prize for Academic Excellence - MSc in Education (QTS) programme (Len Almond Memorial Prize)

A prize to the value of £100, plus a plaque and a certificate, to be awarded to the student with highest overall mark on the MSc in Education (QTS) programme.

Len Almond joined the lecturing staff at Loughborough University in 1979 and went on to hold the post of Director of Physical Education and Senior Lecturer in Physical Activity and Health.  He also became the Founding Director of the British Heart Foundation National Centre for Physical Activity and Health which was based in the School for many years.  Len officially retired from the University in 2003 and sadly passed away in 2017, but during his career he made a huge contribution to thinking and pedagogy within school physical education and to the promotion of physical activity for health in particular, with his work having significant impact nationally and internationally. 

Most notably in Physical Education, this included driving curricular and pedagogical change within Health-related Physical Education, contributing to the development of Teaching Games for Understanding, an alternative approach to skill-focused games teaching, as well as supporting developments in the field of Physical Literacy.  In 2009, Len was awarded an Honorary Doctorate by Loughborough University for his outstanding inspiration, commitment, vision and energy in the promotion of physical activity for health to people of all ages).

Prize for Academic Excellence - MSc Sport Management programme (Sue Glyptis Memorial Prize)

A prize to the value of £100, plus a plaque and a certificate, to be awarded to the student with highest overall mark on the MSc Sport Management programme.

Professor Sue Glyptis (1953-1997) was the University's first female professor and first Professor of Recreation Management. She died tragically early at the age of 44, but left a legacy of a thriving teaching and research community in this field in the University.
