Urgent update: Network connectivity issues on managed Windows PCs on campus and remote access

Update

Many staff using a University-managed Windows laptop or desktop have been experiencing issues since last Thursday when trying to connect to the wired or wireless networks on campus. Affected laptops may become disconnected from the Wi-Fi network and unable to reconnect.

Desktop PC users will need to email the IT Service Desk including the physical location and name of the computer as the steps below are for laptop users only. To check your device name, type ‘Who Am I’ in the Windows Start menu (bottom left menu bar) and launch the app to display the machine name.

As a laptop user who cannot connect to eduroam, what do I need to do?

If you are working on campus, please follow the below steps:

  1. Connect to the Imago Wi-Fi. Guidance on connecting to the Imago Wi-Fi: https://www.lboro.ac.uk/services/it/topics/guest-wifi/
  2. Connect to the University VPN (even though you are physically on campus) using the guidance: https://www.lboro.ac.uk/services/it/remote/vpn/

Using the VPN will also allow you to access all services normally as though you were connected to eduroam.

  1. Once connected, you must keep your machine ‘awake’ for 1 hour. (The updates will not work if the machine goes to sleep during this time).
  2. After an hour, reconnect to eduroam Wi-Fi

If you are working remotely on a University-issued Windows PC, please follow the below steps:

  1. Connect to the University VPN using the guidance: https://www.lboro.ac.uk/services/it/remote/vpn/
  2. Continue using your laptop for at least an hour (this should avoid any issues connecting as normal when you return to campus).

Can I get more information and help?

If you are still experiencing issues with connecting to the network on your managed Windows PC, and cannot connect to the Imago Wi-Fi or the VPN, in the first instance, restart your device, if still unsuccessful, please email the IT Service Desk.

We understand that this issue has been disruptive to many and apologise for the inconvenience caused.
