All the School’s teaching is delivered by inspirational team of research experts.

To ensure flexibility, you will only study one or two modules per semester if appropriate to fit around your study/work commitments.

Compulsory modules

The aims of this module are to:

  • provide a critical understanding of, and skills relating to, aquatic environments, examining quantities, qualities and ecologies of natural water resources and how these relate to society¿s needs
  • demonstrate need for and processes of environmental assessments in low- and middle-income countries.

The aims of this module are to provide students with a critical understanding of, and skills relating to, the important aspects of the provision, operation, maintenance and management of sustainable small water supplies for rural communities.


The aims of this module are to:

  • provide students with a critical understanding of, and skills relating to, the design, operation and management of water supplies in urban areas and
  • familiarise students with the principles of organisational design and management of water utility services in low and middle income countries.

The aims of this module are to:

  • provide students with a critical understanding of, and skills relating to, the reasons, principles and constraints in carrying out research, monitoring and evaluation in a variety of resource poor contexts
  • introduce students with subject specific data gathering and assessment tools relating to water and sanitation services in low and middle-income countries.

The aim of the module is to introduce participants to the principles, concepts, challenges and key issues of managing sustainable water supply and environmental sanitation development programmes in low- and middle-income countries, using the management of solid waste as a practical example.

The aims of this module are to:

  • equip students with a critical understanding of, and skills relating to, the complex mix of institutional, environmental, social, economic, and human-behavioural factors that must be considered when facilitating the improvement of sanitation infrastructure and services in rural, small town, peri-urban and urban settings of low- and middle income countries.
  • enable students to work with technical staff to produce sustainable, integrated sanitation solutions.

The aim of this module is to provide the student with experience of the process and methodology of research by defining and studying (on an individual basis) a complex problem in a specialised area relating to their degree.

The aim of this module is to provide students with critical understanding of, and skills relating to, the complex mix of global challenges and opportunities as they affect the provision and management of sustainable and resilient water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) sector infrastructure and services.

Optional modules (choose one)

The aims of this module are to:

  • introduce general built environment professionals to sustainable Disaster Risk Management (DRM) activities (structural and non-structural) worldwide and
  • explore the links between engineering and planning interventions and subsequent increases or decreases in disaster risk (within the context of the challenges posed by climate change).

The aims of this module are to show how a flexible approach based on appropriate assessments supports the design and implementation of an emergency water supply and/or sanitation (WASH) intervention that meets the needs of the users whilst addressing environmental, institutional and time based issues.

Applicants from colleges affiliated to universities which are above 500 in the Shanghai rankings will be considered as follows:

Our Water Management for Development (Distance Learning) MSc will develop your skills in data collection, analysis, planning and problem-solving.

Our cutting-edge research in the programme for 2025 is shaping the future. You will develop confidence and learn key areas.
