Water Engineering
Developing knowledge and capacity in water engineering worldwide
We undertake research at a range of scales from Kolmogorov to Continental, with our work spanning the fundamental physics of water science, water chemistry and treatment, and associated management and policy issues.
According to the 2021 Shanghai rankings, Loughborough is ranked in the world's top 200 for water resource engineering.
The research group leader is Professor Lee Bosher. We are closely associated with the Water Engineering and Development Centre (WEDC), which was founded more than 50 years ago to address the issues of providing safe water and sanitation in low- and middle-income countries.
We play a leading international role in the academic discipline with several staff holding editorial positions with the major journals in water science and engineering, including Advances in Water Resources, Journal of Hydrology and Water Resources Research.
Our group has four primary research themes:
- Hazards, Risk and Resilience;
- Hydrodynamics and Hydraulics;
- Water Quality, Security and Environmental Engineering;
- Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH).
We also have an active seminar programme:
