This MSc programme is designed to provide you with an in-depth understanding of the physiological, nutritional and metabolic demands of exercise and training, as well as their implications for optimising sport performance and for the maintenance of good health.

The programme offers in-depth study across a range of areas within exercise physiology and sport and exercise nutrition. Practical sessions are taught in specialist teaching laboratories, and you will also use these facilities, as well as our research laboratories, while undertaking your research project.

he theoretical content and practical sessions delivered in sports nutrition and exercise physiology on this course will allow students to develop the fundamental understanding and the ability to apply and translate this knowledge into practice within the sport, exercise and health sectors, enabling you to transition into a highly adept researcher or practitioner.

You will be taught by our internationally renowned academics from the fields of exercise physiology and sport and exercise nutrition, as well as receiving guest sessions from expert professional practitioners from the worlds of performance sport and clinical health.

Outstanding laboratories are provided in two purpose-built facilities, the Clyde Williams building and the National Centre for Sport and Exercise Medicine - East Midlands (NCSEM-EM).

These facilities house dedicated teaching and research space, including physiology, nutrition and molecular biology laboratories, with specialist facilities for environmental physiology (two climatic chambers), disability sport and clinical exercise physiology.

Why you should choose us

Why you should study this degree

  • Benefit from the academic expertise and reputation amongst graduate employers, which has seen Loughborough ranked No.1 in the world for sport-related subjects for the seventh time running (QS World University Rankings by Subject 2017-2023).
  • Our degrees are informed by sector-leading research ranked 1st in the UK for research power and environment in Sport and Exercise Sciences, Leisure and Tourism (Times Higher Education – REF 2021 League Tables).
  • With a strong focus on sport performance, you will develop a fundamental and contemporary understanding of exercise physiology and sport nutrition through high-quality, research-led teaching.
  • You will gain further insights into the physiology and nutrition industry and applied settings through guest speakers from major companies, such as Yakult and Gatorade Sports Science Institute.
  • Add applied experience through voluntary internships with elite athletes on campus through our Coach and Volunteer Academy, as well as through our strong links with British Swimming, British Triathlon, English Institute of Sport and UK Anti-Doping – all based on campus.
  • Undertake a research project under the supervision of world-leading research staff, with expertise in nitric oxide precursors, polyphenols and antioxidants, hydration, exercise and heat, recovery, exercise training, metabolic physiology, neuromuscular physiology and more.
  • Our research in the areas of nutrition and physiology informs policy and practice across high performance sports, including swimming, cycling, triathlon and athletics.
  • Study the MSc part-time and combine your studies with a placement or internship.
  • You will be taught in high-quality teaching environments and have access to world-class facilities across a wide range of sports, at the University of the Year for Sport (The Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide 2022).
  • Take an ISAK body composition qualification with Loughborough Sport - a required qualification for consideration to be a Sport and Exercise Nutrition registered (SENr) practitioner.

What you'll study

The following information is intended as an example only and is typically based on module information for the 2023/24 year of entry. Modules are reviewed on an annual basis and may be subject to future changes. Updated Programme and Module Specifications are made available ahead of each academic year. Please also see Terms and Conditions of Study for more information.

Compulsory modules

Sport and Exercise Nutrition

The aims of this module are to enable students to develop knowledge and understanding of the metabolic demands of sport and exercise and how performance and/or training responses can be optimised through nutrition.

Physiology of Sport and Exercise

The aims of this module are for students to develop in depth knowledge and understanding of the physiological basis of exercise and sporting performance and the various factors that influence this across different athletes and sports.

Compulsory modules

Quantitative Research

The aims of this module are for the student to:

  • gain a critical understanding and appreciation of statistical theory and its application in psychology, sport, exercise and health sciences
  • gain a working knowledge of common statistical procedures in psychology, sport, exercise and health sciences research.

Laboratory Techniques in Exercise Physiology and Nutrition

The aims of this module are for students to develop knowledge and competency in a range of research techniques relevant to the study of sport and exercise physiology/nutrition to enable them to undertake laboratory-based research in these areas.

Research Project: Natural Sciences in Sport and Exercise

The aim of this module is for students to design, conduct and report on an original research study of an aspect of their MSc programme. Students will have the opportunity to conduct either a self-conceived project with the support of an academic supervisor, or to embed into an ongoing staff project that aligns with their area of interest.

Optional modules

Applied Sport and Exercise Nutrition

The aims of this module are for students to develop a detailed understanding of the role of the nutritionist within sport and exercise and to develop a range of relevant practical skills required for applied sport and exercise practice.

Applied Sport and Exercise Physiology

The aims of this module are for students to develop an understanding of current research in the field of physiology of exercise and sport, and its application to the performance, recovery or health of the athlete. Students will also gain an understanding of the framework within which the exercise physiologist operates within a sport-science or clinical setting.

Compulsory modules

Research Project: Natural Sciences in Sport and Exercise

The aim of this module is for students to design, conduct and report on an original research study of an aspect of their MSc programme. Students will have the opportunity to conduct either a self-conceived project with the support of an academic supervisor, or to embed into an ongoing staff project that aligns with their area of interest.

Where you'll study

Laboratory facilities are provided in the £8 million Clyde Williams building, which houses physiology, molecular biology and nutrition research laboratories and teaching rooms. These laboratories are equipped with state-of-the-art equipment to assess physiological and molecular responses to exercise and nutritional interventions, as well as two environmental chambers and apparatus to assess speed, strength and endurance.

You will also have the opportunity to be involved in research, either as a participant or through your research project, taking place in the National Centre for Sport and Exercise Medicine - East Midlands on the Loughborough campus. This building was created as part of London Olympic legacy and houses outstanding exercise physiology and nutrition research laboratories in a state-of-the-art facility.

In addition to several specialist clinical and exercise physiology laboratories, there is a specialist anthropometry laboratory, designated ‘invasive procedures’ rooms for the performance of muscle and adipose tissue biopsies, sample analytical laboratories, recovery rooms and research kitchens. In addition, our renowned disability sport laboratory, conducts exercise testing using various equipment, including a specialist treadmill designed for both wheelchair propulsion and running, and wheelchair, arm crank and handcycle ergometry.
