Our MSc in Clinical Exercise Physiology will equip you with the knowledge and skills necessary to assess health and functional capacity and promote the role of exercise as both a preventive measure and a therapeutic intervention.
With the growing recognition of exercise in managing lifestyle-related diseases, the demand for skilled professionals who understand the role of physical activity in health is rising. Formerly known as the MSc in Exercise as Medicine, this programme reflects this trend, building on Loughborough University’s internationally recognised research in physical activity and health. It's aim - to educate a new, highly skilled group of allied health professionals with the ability to work alongside clinicians and practitioners to manage the epidemic of lifestyle-related diseases and conditions.
The programme is aimed at individuals with a background in exercise science and/or physical activity who wish to enhance their scientific knowledge and skills to effectively promote the uptake of exercise, particularly for individuals with chronic conditions including cancer, cardiovascular, respiratory, neurological and renal diseases, frailty, mental health disorders, metabolic and musculoskeletal conditions.
To further enhance your experience, throughout this programme you will also have the opportunity to participate in carefully curated practice-based learning opportunities. These opportunities, available in both clinical and community settings, allow you to refine your skills and gain valuable experience working with individuals living with chronic diseases, bridging classroom learning with real-world practice.
Based in the National Centre for Sport and Exercise Medicine – East Midlands, you will be taught in high quality teaching environments and have access to state-of-the-art laboratories, designed to facilitate the transfer of cutting-edge research to front-line support and care.

Fees and funding
Fees for the 2026-27 academic year
UK fee
£18,100 Full-time degree per annum
International fee
£32,800 Full-time degree per annum
The fee stated is for a full-time student undertaking a master’s programme of 180 credits. Part-time students will spread this credit load over a two or more years of study as agreed with the School/Department. Fees will be charged for the credit weighting of modules taken in a given year. The tuition fees payable can be calculated by dividing the published fee by 180 and then multiplying by the number of credits to be taken in the specific year.
Fees are reviewed annually and are likely to increase in subsequent years by a small amount (will not exceed 5%) to take into account inflationary pressures.
Your development
Throughout the programme you will develop an understanding of current health and exercise recommendations, as well as the ways in which exercise impacts on health and wellbeing. The programme will also:
- Develop your professional practice: including improved patient interaction and an understanding of good clinical practice, healthcare ethics and informed consent
- Build your understanding of exercise preparticipation health screening: with a focus on medical history, blood pressure and pulmonary function
- Provide you with expertise in delivering health-related physical fitness testing: providing you with an understanding of body composition, cardiorespiratory fitness and muscular fitness
- Give you an understanding of the principles, interpretation, creation and communication of exercise prescription, including strategies for promoting exercise.
