Troubleshooting and FAQs
What versions address the vulnerability?
A version equal to or higher than listed below fixes the vulnerability in that o/s:
- Windows and Mac - 137.0.7151.68/.69
- Linux - 137.0.7151.68
- Android – 137.0.7151.72
- IOS - 137.0.7151.79
I cannot update in the above manner as it says updates are managed by the system administrator.
For University Windows 10 managed devices, the option to manually update Chrome has only just been enabled. Therefore, you may find you are unable to update via the above method at this point in time. If this is the case, try a restart of the computer, or if offsite, ensure you connect the Cisco Secure Client VPN for a period, then try again. This should allow the latest policy to applied after which you can update in the manner described above. Please repeat this advice over a few days if not immediately successful or consider using the device whilst onsite if you are currently using it offsite only.
I have a very old version or the update reports an error when running the manual update.
Try closing all chrome tabs/windows and restarting your computer. If you are still unable to update and remain on a older version, the latest installer has been released to the software centre on Windows devices, and self service area on managed Mac devices. So you can try re-installing chrome by using the installer available in software centre or self service.
Does this effect other browsers?
Yes, it is highly likely other chromium-based browsers will be affected. Microsoft Edge is one such browser. It would be prudent to check and update these browsers and this can be achieved in a similar manner as described for Chrome. The latest MS Edge browser at the time of writing is 137.0.3296.62.
For Windows 10 managed devices, IT Services will be deploying the latest update in the coming days as no manual update option is currently available.
Windows 11 managed devices should auto update Edge, or it can be checked manually from the help and feedback->about menu.
I have tried all the above, but I still can’t update Chrome to the required version.
For University managed devices, please email the IT Service Desk for further assistance.
