Postgraduate couples and families

All campus accommodation at Loughborough University is single occupancy. If you are a postgraduate student that needs accommodation suitable for a couple or a family, you will need to find private accommodation off campus.

We recommend you begin your property search as early as possible, as demand for private rentals is high. A good starting point is:

  • Rightmove: The UK’s largest property portal. Use the university’s postcode LE11 3TU and set a suitable search radius. You can create an account to receive alerts for new listings that match your preferences.
  • Loughborough Studentpad: Filter for properties suitable for 'Couples' or 'Family'. You can create an account to receive alerts for new listings that match your preferences.

Advice for renting private accommodation

1. Right to Rent

Landlords are legally required to verify your right to live in the UK. More info here: gov.uk/prove-right-to-rent

2. Reference Checks

Most letting agents will require:

  • A landlord reference (current or previous)
  • An employer reference (proof of employment or income)

Note: International students may be asked for advance rent payments instead of references.

3. Guarantor

If you haven’t rented before, you may need a UK-based guarantor. If you don’t have one, private guarantor companies can help (fees apply). Always read their Terms & Conditions carefully.

4. Credit Check

Letting agents may carry out a credit check, with your permission. If you have no UK credit history, offering 6 months’ rent in advance can help secure a property.

5. University Landlord Reference

The University can only provide a landlord reference if your accommodation fees have been paid in full.
