Elite Athlete Doctoral Scholarships

We have a fantastic opportunity for budding researchers to continue their studies alongside their sporting development with our Elite Athlete Doctoral Scholarships.

The scholarship covers UK tuition fees, and a living stipend worth around £15k per year (for 3 years).

We are looking for sporting applicants competing in our performance programmes*, who are either targeting a major senior international event, have a realistic opportunity of competing at senior international level within 18 months, or who can demonstrate the potential to make a significant contribution to Loughborough’s sporting success. We expect all of our scholars to compete for the University in BUCS and contribute generally to our sporting objectives.

As a budding researcher, you will need to meet the academic requirements for PhD study, identify a subject area, and find a supervisor to work with you. Opportunities vary by discipline, and there are advertised projects available, or you can devise your own research proposal. To make a formal PhD application, see https://www.lboro.ac.uk/study/postgraduate/apply/

If you would like to be considered for an Elite Athlete Doctoral Scholarship, once you have lined up a project, please complete the following application form by 20th May 2022. Following acceptance on to a PhD programme, and Loughborough Sports' recommendation, a panel convened by the Doctoral College will make the final decision on scholarship recipients. For exceptional candidates, Loughborough Sport would look to make an immediate sporting recommendation, although the PhD application will need to follow the usual processes.

These scholarships are for projects starting in October 2022, and are only available for students who have not already started their PhD at Loughborough University.

The Elite Athlete Doctoral Scholarship is just one of a number of opportunities for postgraduate research, so do have a look at what else is available.

*We currently have performance programmes in athletics, badminton, basketball, cricket, cycling, football, hockey, netball, rugby union, squash, swimming, tennis, triathlon and women's wheelchair basketball.
