Athletic Union Club

Mixed Martial Arts (more commonly known as MMA) is a combat sport that utilises the aspects of many other martial arts disciplines. This modern sport merges Boxing, Kickboxing, Wrestling and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, and has become one of the most popular sports in recent years.

Our club is open to everyone, from complete beginners to advanced martial artists. Don’t worry if you have reservations about being a beginner, as our instructors will adapt the training sessions to you as an individual and you will never do anything you feel uncomfortable with.

Most of our classes contain an element of conditioning, which is designed to increase your cardiovascular endurance, core strength, and muscular endurance. Please note that all of our classes are progressive and every activity and skill can be adapted to suit your specific level.

We have four coached sessions available per week, with one session of open mat. These take place in the Martial Arts centre above Powerbase or in EHB. There are also additional sessions available outside of the University with Wallhead at John Skillens Mixed Martial Arts Centre, should you wish to train more.

Coaching and volunteering

Within most sports there are a range of sports volunteering roles and opportunities for you to get involved and gain experience in. This ranges from coaching and officiating to events, marketing and media and sport science support.
