Our MA User Experience and Service Design degree will develop your critical awareness of major issues in user experience (UX) design, service design and interaction design. Our modules will teach you how to: (1) undertake user research, (2) identify opportunities for creating great user experiences, and (3) design transformative products/services. You will also work with industry clients, and develop material for your portfolio.

The MA User Experience and Service Design equips students to become human centred designers within industry, empowered to design socially and environmentally responsible products and services. The content of the programme will enable you to develop your skills and competencies in both the creative and analytical aspects of UX, whilst working on a diverse range of projects. This includes the opportunity to design experiences that embed digital in the physical world, take an empathic and systemic world view, and use the opportunities presented by new technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI) and augmented reality (AR) to design compelling product and service experiences.

You will develop key skills in user experience design principles and practice including: qualitative and quantitative design research methods, storytelling, interactive prototyping, video prototyping, experience prototyping, interaction design, usability testing, service design, social design, team working and project management. You will further develop your UX research and design practice skills within an evidence-based major project.

The MA in User Experience and Service Design is offered alongside a parallel MSc in User Experience Design programme. The key difference is that the MA has a more empathic and broader world-view of user experience design, whereas the MSc is more focused on empirical investigation, data analysis and technologies that can create great user experiences.

Why you should choose us

Why you should study this degree

UX Designers create the products and services that make life better. Our vision is to produce empathic and 'big thinking' graduates who can discover opportunities for meaningful innovation, and then design products/services to meet user needs and deliver great experiences. We teach you how to be a great UX designer. The MA User Experience and Service Design has six aims, as follows:

  • Nurture comprehensive intellectual understanding of User Experience and Service Design and the vocational and professional skills required to master connecting theory, creativity, and practice.
  • Foster a radical, systemic, and disruptive approach to concept development informed by a detailed understanding of people and context through real world research.
  • Achieve mastery in the conceptualisation, design, and development of transformative, responsible, and sustainable digital and non-digital experiences.
  • Cultivate the organisational, technical, collaborative, and creative skills required to apply User Experience and Service Design across a range of sectors.
  • Challenge students’ preconceptions of User Experience and Service Design by exposing them to transdisciplinary working through practice-based learning and live industry projects.
  • Enable students to become independent scholars and practitioners in User Experience and Service Design, preparing them for future study or practice.

What you'll study

The following information is intended as an example only and is typically based on module information for the 2023/24 year of entry. Modules are reviewed on an annual basis and may be subject to future changes. Updated Programme and Module Specifications are made available ahead of each academic year. Please also see Terms and Conditions of Study for more information.

Our MA User Experience and Service Design programme will give you a solid foundation to develop the skills and knowledge needed for a career as a UX professional.

All students, of any nationality, who are from a design-related background should provide a portfolio showing examples of work relevant to the MA User Experience and Service Design. This should be around 10 pages long and must demonstrate your current understanding of human centred design, including your design process, the project outcome and how you considered the end user experience. Critical reflection on how you could improve your process and project outcomes is encouraged.

If your degree/background means you do not have a portfolio, your personal statement must explain your interest in user experience design and why you want to study on the MA User Experience and Service Design course.

Your development

We are committed to helping you develop the skills and attributes you need to progress successfully in your chosen career.

We offer diverse extracurricular activities – including guest lectures, seminars and entry to UX Design competitions – to build your personal, professional and teamworking skills alongside your academic proficiencies. Each student has a personal tutor who offers mentorship and support to their students throughout the course. Loughborough University also offers an extensive range of societies for students to explore their social, sporting, or creative aspirations.

Your future career

Organisations beyond the design industry (including management and information technology companies) value the user-centred design skills we teach.

Graduates usually pursue careers as user experience designers, interaction designers, user researchers, usability specialists, and service designers. In some cases, graduates go on to careers in research, teaching, or progress onto PhD study. Employment destinations of our recent graduates include IBM Design, IBM iX, Samsung, Next, Dyson, Tencent, Huawei, Baidu, and Pivotal Labs.
