Our PG Certificate Human Factors and Ergonomics for Patient Safety provides an insight into human factors, focusing on the promotion of patient safety in the healthcare sector. It also concentrates on investigations relevant to understanding and intervening in these situations, with the view to improving conditions for those exposed.
This CIEHF recognised programme examines how best to ensure a good fit between people, their actions, the objects they use and the environments which they occupy. You will apply theoretical principles, data and methods to ensure that design is optimised for human wellbeing and overall system performance.
You will benefit from teaching provided by world-leading academics, industry experts and specialists to ensure that you are trained to the highest professional standard. Previous guest speakers for our Human Factors and Ergonomics for Patient Safety programme include industry experts from Humanscale, EDF Energy, Rolls Royce and AMEC, as well as specialists in health and safety, aviation safety, environmental health, health practitioners and experienced lecturers from other universities.

Our PGCert programme is designed to help you develop ergonomics competencies in critical and practical skills and the scientific methods necessary for professional practice.
Compulsory
Cognitive Ergonomics
The field of Cognitive Ergonomics involves the competencies and limitations of users during their interaction with a system in general (e.g., attention, memory, perception, schemas and strategies, mental models and cognitive workload).
The main aim of this module is to provide an introductory overview of Cognitive Ergonomics, to describe specific cognitive functions and to describe everyday situations where they may be applied including the workplace, the home, in transportation and in other environments.
An additional aim of the module is to introduce the basic concept of ergonomics as a scientific discipline that is involved in the evaluation of tasks, jobs, products, environments and systems and how these interact with humans.
Physical Ergonomics
The aim of this module is for students to gain a foundation in human function relevant to ergonomics: anatomy, physiology, biomechanics and anthropometry. This will include aspects of physical performance in work and leisure activities. The purpose is to provide a basis for understanding applications in other modules on the Ergonomics and Human Factors programmes. The module may also be of interest to Design and Engineering students who require knowledge in this area.

Human Factors and Systems
The aim of this module is to enable students to understand systems ideas as they apply to human factors and to organizations, the causation of systems accidents, the consequences of these for the design of systems, and to have a framework of knowledge for further use in professional and social life.
Healthcare Ergonomics and Patient Safety
The aim of this module is for students to gain an understanding of applying ergonomics
methods and knowledge to the health and social care field. This applied module will provide the student with tools and skills to evaluate the effects of care delivery from an organisational, worker and patient/service user perspective. This will include aspects of patient safety, environmental design and safety behaviour in the care context.
How you'll be assessed
Assessment may include individual reports, group evaluations, group presentations, open book tests, class tests, critiques, coursework, a dissertation and a viva.
How you'll study
Each module is block taught over a one-week intensive period. This flexible approach is suitable for those who wish to work full or part-time alongside their studies. Outside of this time you will be expected to complete additional programme materials and assignments. We will provide you with access to an interactive online system with additional materials and information, where you will also remotely participate in tutorial-type discussions.

Where you'll study
Our Environmental Ergonomics Research Centre facilities include an environmental test suite, light and vision labs. This is located in a purpose-built facility close to the Design building and enables students to study the interaction of people with their physical environment.

The fee stated is for a full-time student undertaking a master’s programme of 180 credits. Part-time students should divide the published fee by 180 credits and then multiply by the number of credits they are taking to calculate their tuition fees.
Your development
On successful completion of the programme, you will have developed expert skills in information technology, numeracy, problem solving, teamwork and management.
You will develop skills needed to access instructional material (eg experimental demonstrations) and research tools (eg statistical packages) on computers and search for relevant material on the internet. You will become proficient in numerical data collection and be able to present it clearly in tables and graphs, and to analyse it using a range of statistical tools.
You will also become skilled in clarifying important questions related to human factors, ergonomics and patient safety, demonstrating an ability to consider alternative solutions and evaluate outcomes. You will learn to share responsibility for a task with others, to agree common goals and methods and to co-ordinate the use of common resources.
As a graduate of this programme, you will have experience in project management, including its contextual interfaces. You will be proficient in controlling and leading meetings, writing reports, demonstrating key skills, and understanding training and skills issues.

The School of Design and Creative Arts at Loughborough University boasts strong industry links. As part of the Human Factors and Ergonomics for Patient Safety programme, you will be encouraged to undertake your main project in the field, to gain realistic experiences and learning. Programme content has a strong practitioner bias, where learning provides vocational training towards a career as an ergonomist or human factors expert.
Successful completion of this programme will enable you to become a professional ergonomics or human factors practitioner. The broad nature of the programme also opens up possibilities in other scientific and research careers.
