Our MSc in User Experience Design combines the empirical methods of data analysis with the empathy-centred skills essential to UX Design. Our modules enhance your ability to prototype digital products alongside systematic evaluation and an understanding of their core technologies. You will learn to design innovative product experiences with new technologies.
The MSc course develops your skills and competencies in UX Design’s creative and analytical aspects as you complete a diverse range of projects. We offer you the opportunity to design experiences that embed digital technology in the physical world, including Internet of Things (IoT) and artificial intelligence (AI). You will develop an understanding of how the technology works, how to prototype advanced experiences, and how to design interactions that create meaningful outcomes and spark joy. As it is an MSc, you will approach evaluation through the scientific method: collecting data through experimentation and applying empirical analysis in order to develop technology-based solutions.
You will develop critical skills in user experience design principles, qualitative and quantitative data handling, statistical analysis, low and high-fidelity prototyping, and scientific research. You will work with the UX industry through collaborative projects, seminars, and guest lectures. We also offer extra-curricular design challenges. These design challenges give you the chance to work with international experts from the UK, to China and other countries, and enter national design competitions. We will prepare you to be an analytical, technically-minded, and empathic UX Designer.
The MSc in User Experience Design is offered alongside a parallel MA in User Experience and Service Design programme. The key difference is that the MSc is more focused on empirical investigation, data analysis and technologies that can create great user experiences, whereas the MA has a more empathic and broader world-view of user experience design.

UX Designers create the experiences and products that make life better. Our vision is to produce analytical graduates who leverage technology within the design of user-centred interactive products and services. We bridge the gap between emotional design and technical aptitude. To achieve this vision, the course has seven aims:
- Develop empathic digital products and services based on design-thinking models and negotiation of conflicting user perspectives; realised through Experience Design.
- Appraise user-centred design’s fundamental research techniques to investigate emotional and cognitive experiences; realised through Design Research Methods.
- Synthesise usability evaluation, website design, and psychology to make informed judgements on iterative website design; realised through Usability Principles and Practice.
- Support the student’s creative, analytical, or technological skills growth within design or creative arts contexts; realised through the Optional modules.
- Construct sophisticated Human-Machine prototypes with the aid of statistics, advanced usability principles, data analytics and experimental prototyping techniques; realised through UX Design for Advanced Technology.
- Design innovative solutions to society’s complex problems while collaborating with other design specialities; realised through the Industry Project.
- Develop original research into unsolved and novel User Experience and Human-Computer Interaction problems; realised through user-centred experimentation via the new UX Design Research module.

Compulsory
Experience Design
The aim of this module is to introduce the human centred design process and core experience design principles and their application to the design of interactive products and services.
Usability, Principles and Practice
The aim of this module is to broaden the student designer's experience and skills to include knowledge of, and competence with usability evaluation tools and principles to support the experience design process.
Design Research Methods
The aim of this module is to introduce students to the design research process, and how the methods and tools it comprises are used to collect, analyse, synthesise, and interpret research data for design research projects.
Optional
Design for AI Products
The aim of this module is to enable students to identify AI opportunities in a Product (Service) Design context, critically understand and apply the four stages of the AI Design Process. Analyse the steps to build a business case through assessing the needs of stakeholders, mapping the process, cost modelling, assessing technical readiness, prioritising opportunities, and asking key questions.
Experience Design for Digital Health
This module aims to equip students with the knowledge and skills necessary to describe, critically evaluate, design and justify their decisions when designing modern user interfaces for health data visualisations in the context of public health, or chronic conditions and healthy lifestyle monitoring and self-management. Examples include interfaces for mobile health apps, wearable technologies, connected health technologies, or public health surveillance dashboards (used in pandemics and other disease outbreaks or public health challenges).
Tangible Interaction Design
This module aims to broaden the experience and skills of the student designer to include knowledge of, and competence with creating interactive Internet of Things-based prototypes. Students will develop their knowledge and skills in programmable electronics systems and mechanical systems. Through the module, they will extend the application of appropriate modelling methods as a means of combining, and incorporating, electronic and mechanical systems into the design of products.

Industry Project
The aim of the module is to introduce students to the professional world of the experience designer through the tackling an industry set brief and delivering an evidence-based and meaningful design outcome for a sponsoring organisation. The module will enable students to master professional collaboration, communication, and reflection skills and will support their development towards becoming a professional experience designer.
Advanced Interaction Design
This module aims to advance the student's knowledge and skill in advanced interaction design. The module introduces human factors, multiple prototyping methods and user evaluation methods through lectures, practical examples, and supervised working to achieve this aim.
Students will gain critical thinking skills and techniques to translate high-level UX concepts into viable products -focusing on Extended Reality (XR) products, including Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR).
UX Research Major Project

How you'll be assessed
We assess students through coursework and oral presentations. With coursework, students work independently and in groups to collect and analyse human data, synthesise insights, generate designs, and produce prototypes. Through oral presentations, students present their designs and defend their decisions to experts. Our MSc in User Experience Design has no exams. Lecturers also offer informal feedback on students’ progress and understanding throughout the lectures to support their learning.

Where you'll study
You will study in our award-winning £21 million Design building. Our modules offer you industry-standard resources to support usability evaluations and research activities. Resources include specialist eye-tracking software, UX prototyping software, Arduino prototyping labs, and audio-visual equipment. You will also benefit from our Mac lab with a wide range of design and UX software.
Entry requirements
Our entry requirements are listed using standard UK undergraduate degree classifications i.e. first-class honours, upper second-class honours and lower second-class honours. To learn the equivalent for your country, please choose it from the drop-down below.
We will consider applicants from all academic backgrounds, not just design. You must have a genuine interest in new technologies and be comfortable working with data. Experience of software development/coding is not necessary. We value and promote diversity of all forms on our course. We are looking for applicants who can demonstrate a genuine desire to use new technologies to design better user experiences.
Entry requirements for United Kingdom
A 2:1 honours degree (or equivalent international qualification). We will consider students from a range of disciplines relevant to User Experience Design (including Art and Design, Computer Science, Media, Psychology, Business).

All students, of any nationality, who are from a design-related background should provide a portfolio showing examples of work relevant to the MSc User Experience Design. This should be around 10 pages long. You must demonstrate your understanding of human centred design, including your design process, the project outcome, and how you considered the end user’s experience. We encourage you to critically reflect on how you could improve your technique and project outcomes.
If your degree/background means you do not have a portfolio, your personal statement must explain your interest in user experience design and why you want to study on the MSc User Experience Design course.
