Our Construction Project Management with Building Information Modelling (BIM) MSc programme combines our heritage in teaching Construction Management with our world-leading research in building performance, simulation and information management.

Our Construction Project Management with BIM MSc is for those who wish to excel in the new digitalised construction sector. It combines the technical and managerial sides of the discipline while providing a digital approach to construction project processes and challenges using cutting edge digital tools, platforms and underlying processes.

The School of Architecture, Building and Civil Engineering is one of four Royal Academy of Engineering Centres of Excellence in Sustainable Building Design, and one of the most highly funded built environment groups by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC).

The School hosts the National Facility for Infrastructure Construction (N-FIC), funded by the UK Collaboratorium for Research in Infrastructure & Cities (UKCRIC). We also house Building and Industrial Services Pipework Academy (BISPA), which is a collaboration with global steel manufacturer Tata Steel and the Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE). This uniquely holistic view of construction makes it best placed for developing graduates that meet the increasing demands of the sector.

Why you should choose us

Why you should study this degree

Professional recognition

This programme is accredited by the Joint Board of Moderators (JBM), and the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) subject to conditions, having been judged to meet the CIOB Education Framework.

The Joint Board of Moderators includes the Institution of Civil Engineers, Institution of Structural Engineers, Institute of Highway Engineers, the Permanent Way Institution and the Chartered Institution of Highways and Transportation. The accreditation is on behalf of the Engineering Council as meeting the requirements for Further Learning for a Chartered Engineer (CEng) for candidates who have already acquired a partial CEng accredited undergraduate first degree.* For further information, please visit JBM.

*It should be noted that candidates completing the MSc who hold an underpinning accredited IEng degree or a non-accredited bachelor's degree will need to apply for an academic assessment to determine whether they will meet the educational base for CEng registration.

What you'll study

The following information is intended as an example only and is typically based on module information for the 2023/24 year of entry. Modules are reviewed on an annual basis and may be subject to future changes. Updated Programme and Module Specifications are made available ahead of each academic year. Please also see Terms and Conditions of Study for more information.

The modules on our Construction Project Management with Building Information Modelling (BIM) MSc programme are designed to deliver a high-quality educational experience that develops and sustains your knowledge, skills and aspirations in the further advancement of your career within the construction industry.

Compulsory modules

Digital Buildings in a Global Design Context

The aim of this module is to use BIM to design and manage the whole lifecycle performance of complex high performance buildings. Students will develop team skills through working in design groups, to understand sustainable and resilient design and to generate schematic concepts before developing the best. Students will work with 3D architectural and engineering BIM models using appropriate software to further develop their concepts individually.

Research Methods

The aims of this module are for the student to become familiar with and comprehend the wide range of research methods and skills needed to investigate, understand, communicate and execute a research project.

Principles and Application of BIM

The aims of the module is to introduce managers to fundamental BIM principles and present wide range of BIM tools and technologies.

Principles of Project Management

The aim of this module is to provide students with an understanding of construction project management principles and techniques.

Research Dissertation

The aim of this module is to provide the student with experience of the process and methodology of research by defining and studying (on an individual basis) a complex problem in a specialised area relating to their programme of study.

Compulsory modules

Net Zero Building Design

The module introduces the processes and principles of low energy and net zero carbon building design and modelling and, also, provides the requisite training and preparation to become a BREEAM Accredited Graduate.

Design Management

The aim of this module is to develop students' understanding of the principles of design management and techniques for cost and value management.

Federated Building Information Modelling

The creation, deployment and use of aggregated and integrated (Level 2) models are key goals of collaboration through BIM. This module aims to deliver hands-on practical skills on the use of BIM technologies (i.e. design software and collaboration tools) for creation and collaboration of federated/aggregated 3D BIM models. The theories of group working; workspace awareness and shared situational awareness within design teams/processes will be explored.

Research Dissertation

The aim of this module is to provide the student with experience of the process and methodology of research by defining and studying (on an individual basis) a complex problem in a specialised area relating to their programme of study.

Optional modules (choose one)

Management of Construction Processes and Techniques

The aims of the module are to develop students' knowledge of leading contemporary management concepts and innovations and how these contribute to successful construction projects, including the management of risk and construction logistics.

Organization and People

The aim of the module is to introduce students to the range of techniques and strategies for managing people and teams within the context of the construction sector, and to provide students with the opportunity to apply this knowledge within individual and team-based exercises as well as an outdoor management course.

The module is a unique combination of developing and deepening students understanding of their own management competencies, theoretical grasp of theory (leadership, teamwork, motivation, power and communication) and a fantastic opportunity to engage in experiential learning over three very challenging, problem solving days within an outdoor environment. Developing and then combining knowledge of management competencies, theory and practice with the opportunity to experience and self-reflect upon their connections is unique within this module.

Construction Law and Contract Management

The aim of the module is to develop students' understanding of construction law, procurement and contract management practice.

AEC Global Integrated Design Delivery

The aim of this module is to provide a project based learning experience that exposes students to cross-disciplinary, globally distributed teamwork focused on system integration of architecture-structural engineering-construction management-HVAC-life cycle financial management across time, space, culture, and technology.

Compulsory modules

Research Dissertation

The aim of this module is to provide the student with experience of the process and methodology of research by defining and studying (on an individual basis) a complex problem in a specialised area relating to their programme of study.
