Our MSc Climate Change Science and Management degree addresses the urgent science of climate change, risk and management with a broad, problem-focused perspective that will suit students from a wide range of backgrounds.

Climate change is the most critical and urgent issue facing humanity in the 21st century. How to keep populations and infrastructure safe from extreme weather events; how to enhance or simply maintain human health and living standards; how to link activities from public and commercial sectors, and from diverse academic disciplines, to address common challenges in the resilience and sustainability of global living systems; these are challenges that define the 21st century and will define the legacy of the individuals and institutions of today.

Modules that form part of this programme tackle issues such as defining and modelling climate risk, tools for environmental management, sustainability and development, and crisis governance. Students will graduate prepared to become agents of change who can embed sustainable, low-carbon practices into their careers. Their training will enable public and private sector organisations to survive and thrive because they have a command of both science and management.

Geography and Environment is located inside a state-of-the-art research and teaching facility, complete with a river science laboratory, geospatial laboratory, and a campus-based weather station. The campus also has a 16-hectare research forest, comprised of ancient and semi-natural woodland.

Compulsory

The aim of this module is to enable students to:

  • acquire an understanding of the hands-on fundamentals of GIS;
  • apply GIS techniques to analyse environmental data, generate and present useful information and support decision making processes;
  • appreciate and explain the key benefits and limitations associated with the use of GIS and its underpinning data.

The aim of this module is to develop knowledge, understanding and skills required to undertake hydrological and meteorological measurements, and to evaluate measurement and monitoring practices and policies for a changing climate.

The aim of this module is to develop an understanding of alternative climate pathways, to use data and tools to define probable climate futures (with a focus on the UK over the 21st century), and to rehearse strategies for communicating future change.

The aim of this research-led module is to understand how the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) relate to each other and to model their interactions, with a special focus on the quantitative analysis of Climate, Land, Energy, and Water systems (CLEWs). Students will work with the CLEWs modelling framework, developed as part of the Climate Compatible Growth programme within STEER – the Loughborough Centre for Sustainable Transitions: Energy, Environment and Resilience.

The aims of this module are for students to develop research project and proposal ideas and to relate their research experience to environmental management practice through interaction with professionals in a range of careers, with a view to enhancing their own professional development.

The aims of this module are to introduce students to mathematical and numerical modelling in (i) the simulation of natural hazards and (ii) the application of this in geospatial models of risk. It will provide an opportunity for the student to obtain an understanding of the benefits and limitations of modelling methodologies.

Climate services is a growth industry involving the translation of climate science into usable formats that support high-consequence decision-making, operating rules, and design of long-lived assets, despite deep uncertainty about the future. The aim of this module is to understand diverse sources of climate risk information and, through practical exercises, learn to implement appraisal frameworks used to operationalise climate science, within complex institutional, ethical and governance landscapes.

The aim of this research-led module is to understand policy options and their economic impacts on sustainable development, with a focus on greenhouse gas (GHG) mitigation and adaptation in the energy sector. Students will gain hands-on experience with OSeMOSYS, a powerful open-source energy modelling tool, developed as part of the Climate Compatible Growth programme within STEER – the Loughborough Centre for Sustainable Transitions: Energy, Environment and Resilience.

The principal aim of this module is to produce an original, critical piece of research specific to the programme on which a student is registered. An original analysis of data is expected, which may use primary data or secondary data or a combination of the two, with appropriate contextualization in the relevant literature, progressive research methodologies and skills in data analysis, interpretation and writing-up.

The fee stated is for a full-time student undertaking a master’s programme of 180 credits. Part-time students will spread this credit load over a two or more years of study as agreed with the School/Department. Fees will be charged for the credit weighting of modules taken in a given year. The tuition fees payable can be calculated by dividing the published fee by 180 and then multiplying by the number of credits to be taken in the specific year.

Fees are reviewed annually and are likely to increase in subsequent years by a small amount (will not exceed 5%) to take into account inflationary pressures.

Richard is a Reader in Climate Futures with over 20 years’ teaching experience, and has published over 40 peer-reviewed papers on aspects of both Arctic and Antarctic environments.

Dr Guy Tallentire

University Teacher in Geographical Information Systems

Guy teaches broadly across physical geography, in particular modules that include Geographical Information Systems and remote sensing. His current research is focussed on the Arctic, a region which is warming up to six times faster than anywhere else on the planet.

Professor Joanna Bullard

Professor of Physical Geography

Jo’s research focuses on aeolian processes, landforms & sediments in both dryland and coastal environments. It contributes to debates concerning the responses of arid & coastal aeolian systems to climate fluctuations and the potential importance of aeolian processes in global biogeochemical cycles.

Dr John Hillier

Reader in Natural Hazard Risks

John is a geologist and physical geographer who uses numerical methods to model both the physics and statistics of active and Quaternary Earth processes. His teaching is mainly in the area of natural hazards, risk and catastrophe modelling.

Professor Rob Wilby

Professor of Hydroclimatic Modelling

Rob's research is about the management of present and projected climate risks to freshwater environments and urban areas. His teaching examines the relationship between the climate system and society.

Professor Paul Wood

Professor of Ecohydrology and Physical Geography

Paul is an ecohydrologist with research interests in environmental flows. His teaching explores ecohydrology with a focus river ecology, how communities respond to environmental change and the conservation and management of freshwater habitats.

Dr Leigh Martindale

University Teacher in Sustainable Geographies

Leigh is a Human Geography academic with a focus on sustainable development, climate change, and nexus modelling.

Dr Edwin Baynes

Senior Lecturer in Physical Geography

Edwin’s research interests cover a broad range of quantitative geomorphology; aiming to understand the physical processes that control the evolution of the Earth’s surface. He teaches broadly across physical geography, in particular geomorphology and fluvial environments.
