Professor Sergey Gavrilyuk

Professor Gavrilyuk is a Full Professor at Aix-Marseille University and an internationally recognised expert in the mathematical modelling of solid and fluid mechanics. His research has led to major advances in the areas of multiphase and interfacial flows, dispersive wave phenomena, shock waves, and hypervelocity impact phenomena. He has authored more than 100 research papers and 2 books. A highly-cited author, one of his most influential works is the paper co-authored with R. Saurel, “Mathematical and numerical modeling of two-phase compressible flows with micro-inertia”, J. Comput. Phys. (2002), which has received more than 236 citations.
Professor Gavrilyuk has extensive experience in leading research projects and has secured several grants from the French National Research Agency (ANR), in addition to research contracts with the French Atomic Energy Commission (CEA). He has supervised 11 PhD students and two postdoctoral research associates (PDRAs), and is currently supervising 1 PDRA. He has also served as an external examiner on more than 30 PhD committees and over 10 habilitation committees. He is a member of the editorial boards of the Journal of Nonlinear Waves and Mathematics and Mechanics of Complex Systems.
At Aix-Marseille University, he currently serves as Head of International Relations and Programme Director of WAVES (Waves, Acoustics, Vibrations, Engineering and Sound), a two-year international Master’s programme that awards multiple national Master’s degrees together with a Joint Diploma Supplement, supported by the Erasmus Mundus Programme.
During their IAS Fellowship, Professor Gavrilyuk will be collaborating with Dr Ricardo Barros and Dr Karima Khusnutdinova from the Department of Mathematical Sciences.
