What is the Apprenticeship Levy?
>>The Apprenticeship Levy was introduced in April 2017 and replaces the old funding system. If you are an employer with a pay bill of over £3 million each year, you will have paid the apprenticeship levy from the 6 April 2017. The Levy is charged at 0.5% of your entire pay bill. This is collected by HMRC by monthly payments through PAYE and paid in to your Digital Account.
What is a Level 7 Apprenticeship?
>>An apprenticeship involves undertaking a job role which is accompanied by training and the development of essential transferable skills. Apprentices must be aged 16 or over and be in paid employment for the duration of their apprenticeship. Apprentices are employed throughout and spend part of the time at University via day or block release.
Level 7 apprenticeships involve partnerships between employers, universities and professional bodies to co-design apprenticeships to meet full occupational competency, training and assessment.
Can I offer a Level 7 Apprenticeship to an existing member of staff?
>>Yes. Existing staff can commence an apprenticeship as long as you can demonstrate that by doing so it will enhance their job role and support them to sustain employment.
How will we support you?
>>We will need to agree a contract for services with Loughborough University for the delivery of your apprenticeship service. Each apprentice will be assigned a workplace tutor by the University to ensure they are fully supported to successfully achieve their full apprenticeship.
For those organisations that choose to use their Apprenticeship Levy, this is a new way of working with the School of Business and Economics. We are here to help support you with both the administration and management support and mentoring by:
- Managing the HMRC Digital Service Gateway for you
- Providing a full induction programme to prepare your employees and their managers for the apprenticeship journey
- Offering coaching and support throughout the programme to support your employees
- Offering specific training support to your managers with team members on the programme to enable them to be more effective mentors
If an employee has already done an apprenticeship can they do another?
>>Yes, they can, provided they are learning substantial new skills. A new apprenticeship may be undertaken at the same level, a higher level or even at a lower level than the one they have previously completed.

How will Loughborough University staff support us during the apprenticeship?
>>Students will be supported throughout the programme by the University's Apprenticeship team to ensure they successfully achieve their full apprenticeship, including work-based learning support and pastoral care.
Do I have to change the employment contract?
>>You must pay your apprentice their normal salary for the time they are in work and in their off-the-job training and study time. Your employee must have a contract of employment and be employed in a job with enough scope to gain the knowledge, skills and behaviours that they need to achieve their apprenticeship.
I am keen to consider the Apprenticeship route, but I am concerned about the 20% off-the-job funding rule?
>>Although all apprentices have a 20% off-the-job funding requirement it doesn’t mean the apprentice has to spend 20% of their time out of the organisation. The time can be spent at their normal place of work as long as they are doing things that are not seen as part of their normal job, such as studying towards the qualification aspect of the apprenticeship.
