In 2023 the UK Government, industry stakeholders and partners created a standard for the knowledge, skills and behaviours expected from asset managers at a senior level. This Apprenticeship is designed to help managers and leaders achieve this standard and develop more sustainable organisations.

This part-time Infrastructure Asset Management Professional Apprenticeship is particularly relevant if your organisation is looking to invest in its current and future asset management leaders to build your strategic capabilities.

This level 7 Apprenticeship is fully funded through the Apprenticeship Levy, allowing employees to study part-time and develop the capabilities to lead asset management functions at a senior level.

Apprentices carry on working with you while they study and apply management theory within your workplace as they learn to adapt to new scenarios and implement new ideas.

Through work-based assignments, participants develop practical and innovative solutions to current problems you may be facing. Graduates from our other apprenticeship programmes have gone on to design, update and improve core strategic processes within their organisations as a direct result of their studies.

Apprentices spend time away from their job, studying through a mix of face-to-face, interactive online and work-based learning. The rest of their time is spent in the workplace applying their new skills and knowledge to your organisation. This enables them to balance their work commitments with studying part time at one of the UK’s leading universities.

The Apprenticeship covers the latest theories and thinking in areas such as personal effectiveness, strategy, performance management, operations, risk and resilience, entrepreneurship, information management and leading change.

Participants also have plenty of opportunity to learn and share current practice and insights with peers, often building long-lasting business networks.

The blended learning approach, with block face-to-face teaching and online content, supports participants to balance learning, work and personal commitments effectively.

After successful completion of the programme and an End Point Assessment, each apprentice receives two awards: the Infrastructure Asset Management Professional Apprenticeship and an MSc award in Infrastructure Asset Management.

Support throughout the work-based learning

Each apprentice works with an Academic Mentor from Loughborough Business School, along with a Work-Based Mentor chosen by you. These mentors support the apprentice, mapping their learning across to the apprenticeship standards, and making sure you and they get the most from the programme. Our Workplace Learning Specialist, and experienced academic and administrative teams, are also there to support you and your apprentices throughout.

Our Infrastructure Asset Management Professional Apprenticeship is studied part-time and is designed to equip you with the management and leadership capabilities required to lead at a senior level. The Apprenticeship is studied over 28 months leading to the completion of the Infrastructure Asset Management Professional Apprenticeship and an MSc award in Infrastructure Asset Management.

Compulsory modules

Principles of Asset Management

The aim of this module is for the student to understand the range of asset management principles and demonstrate contextual knowledge of the industrial projects, enterprises, environments and stakeholders associated with complex engineered products & services.  Whilst the nature of the role of asset management has evolved markedly over recent decades, it is the ability to take that role's holistic perspective that the module aims to develop in the student.

Applied Systems Thinking

The aims of this module are to enable students to apply a systems approach to challenges and opportunities by:

  • Developing students abilities to adopt an holistic approach to addressing systems problems
  • Providing students with knowledge of systems thinking tools and how to select the most appropriate tools for the problem or opportunity at hand

Innovation and Entrepreneurship in Engineering

The aim of this module is for the students to understand the relationship between creative management, innovation and enterprise in a learning environment that provides the interactive methods and tools for individual and group success.

Strategy, Governance and Risk

The aims of this module are to:

  • provide students with the knowledge and skills to create a strategic business plan.
  • equip students with knowledge on horizon scanning, strategic positioning, strategic capabilities and resources, strategic options and innovative strategic thinking including the governance and risk analysis of successful strategic implementation;
  • create an understanding of risk factors and the importance of stakeholder engagement and governance models;
  • create an innovative strategic plan for a business which gains support from stakeholders and addresses risk factors involved in the implementation of the plan.

Leading and Influencing Change

The aims of this module are to:

  • develop participants' understanding of leadership, particularly within an environment of change
  • increase participants' skills in building agile and collaborative cultures which gain buy-in for change initiatives
  • equip participants with tools and methods to initiate and lead change in organisations and to manage conflict that might arise from the change process
  • identify methods for influencing organisational vision, culture and values
  • shape and manage communication strategy within change initiatives
  • develop skills to influence upwards and outwards
  • enhance negotiation and advocacy skills to build reputation and effective collaboration with diverse groups of stakeholders.

Asset Management Operations, Risk and Resilience

The aim of this module is for the student to understand the operational demands of asset management and project delivery implications, whilst considering risk and resilience management. 

Personal Values and Effectiveness

The aims of this module are to:

  • develop self-awareness of personal effectiveness and recognition of understanding of influencing others as a leader;
  • explore the practical application of theory to fostering more effective work relationships;
  • introduce methods for finding, analysing and using relevant data to produce persuasive, evidence-based reports;
  • build strategies for continuing personal development;
  • develop ethical decision making practices.

  • equip participants with the knowledge and skills necessary for the effective use of accounting and financial information in the management of commercial organisations, to be able to challenge financial assumptions in accounts, budgets and strategic decisions. 
  • develop the ability to utilise asset costing and valuation techniques and apply uncertainty analysis
  • monitor and report on the performance of assets and asset management.

Entry requirements

Our entry requirements are listed using standard UK undergraduate degree classifications i.e. first-class honours, upper second-class honours and lower second-class honours. To learn the equivalent for your country, please choose it from the drop-down below.

Entry requirements for United Kingdom

A minimum of three years’ management/professional experience and ideally an undergraduate degree or relevant professional qualification.

We also welcome applications from candidates who do not have a degree but who have been identified by their employer as meeting the necessary requirements for the Apprenticeship. These candidates may be asked to an interview meeting with the Programme Director.

Applicants will also need to provide evidence of Maths and English qualifications at level 2 (GCSE grade C or above). This is a Government requirement for all apprenticeships.

Applicants from colleges affiliated to universities in the top 250 Shanghai rankings will be considered if they have achieved or are likely to achieve final marks of 75%-84%.

Applicants from colleges affiliated to universities which are 251-500 in the Shanghai rankings will be considered if they have achieved or are likely to achieve final marks of 80%-87%.

Applicants from colleges affiliated to universities which are above 500 in the Shanghai rankings will be considered as follows:

  • School of Business and Economics: not considered
  • All other programmes if they have achieved or are likely to achieve final marks of 80%-87%.
