Preparation:

Use the internet to research some answers to the following general questions:

  1. Which countries fought the Second Boer War, and why?
  2. What was ‘Mafeking Fever’?

Some useful overview websites are:

If you have time, and want to explore some primary sources before your visit, have a go at some of these questions too:

  • Study some of the photographs and drawings, from the time, of field hospitals and war wounded (there are hundreds available via the Welcome Institute website - https://wellcomecollection.org/works?query=%22South%20African%20War,%201899-1902.%22). (content warning: some of the images contain scenes of violence and conflict associated with war).
  • What kind of impact do you think these images would have on the public at home?

Watch the propaganda film, Kruger’s Dream of Empire, from the period, available at this link. https://www.iwm.org.uk/collections/item/object/1060000075.

  • What do you think is being shown in this film?
  • What kind of response do you think the film makers were trying to generate?
  • How do you think audiences would have reacted?
