Overview
In the past five years, automotive technologies have undergone remarkable changes. Electrification and connectivity are now at the centre of the future of the industry. Manufacturers are adapting their engineering practices to meet these evolving demands. They face substantial pressure to streamline development timelines and cut costs by embracing digital engineering processes. The Automotive Engineering programme at Loughborough is designed to equip you with specialised knowledge in areas directly aligned with the dynamic automotive industry and the future of ground transportation.
Our Department of Aeronautical and Automotive Engineering (one of only two in the UK) has been teaching Automotive Engineering and working with major UK industries for over fifty years. This course is based on our heritage of working alongside industry. From the outset, we make use of automotive-specific examples in teaching engineering fundamentals. This is an approach that differs from many other automotive engineering courses in the UK. Our ongoing exchange of knowledge with industry ensures that our taught courses are immediately relevant to the problems faced by industry today.
This course covers topics related to new powertrain architectures and specialist modules including Battery Technology and Machine Intelligence. The course also covers more foundational topics such as Aerodynamics, Materials, Structures and Experimental and Computational Fluid Dynamics. These provide you with a comprehensive knowledge of the underlying and unchanging physics of automotive systems essential to modern automotive engineering.
As an automotive engineer, you will make extensive use of your theoretical and analytical skills. It is also important for you to be able to appreciate the more practical aspects of engineering. Practical activities are integral to our course. For example, you will spend a week at HORIBA MIRA proving ground where you will learn how to collect and analyse vehicle handling, off-road dynamics, noise measurement, braking performance and wet weather driving data. This and many other ‘hands-on’ activities will enable you to put the theory you have learned into practice.
Teamwork and management skills are critical to you as you develop your career and move to more senior positions. During the course you will have many opportunities to develop these skills, including working as part of a team to design a vehicle of the future. In your final year you will manage your own original research project to solve a real-world engineering problem.

What's the difference between MEng and BEng?
The first two years of the BEng and MEng Automotive Engineering degree share the same format and structure, with a high level of fundamental engineering and automotive specific subjects from day one and examples tuned to your interest.The MEng courses differ from the BEng by offering the opportunity to study topics in more detail with the option to study a modern language.
You can choose whether to take a placement year. The MEng course takes four years to complete, or five years with a placement year, while the BEng takes three years, or four years with a placement. The placement is normally taken after the second year, but MEng students can opt to take it after the third year.
It is possible to transfer from a BEng to an MEng up to the end of the second year, providing that the transfer progression criteria have been met.

You will also get the opportunity to take part in extra curricular activities, such as Formula Student, where you can help design and build an electric racing car that will compete at Silverstone motor racing circuit with universities from all over Europe. What you'll study
The automotive industry is changing rapidly. There is an emphasis on digital engineering, electric propulsion and autonomous driving using artificial intelligence. The course introduces these concepts, as well as the fundamentals underpinning them, from year one.

From the first term you will start to study Vehicle Design and Development. As well as this you will learn engineering fundamentals such as thermodynamics, mechanics, materials, and manufacturing.

Materials and Structures
The aims of the module are as follows:
- To give the students an introduction to different classes of engineering materials, their properties and applications.
- To provide students with an understanding of the major principles used in determining the properties and structure of materials.
- To gain an understanding of the main engineering metals and their structure control.
- To gain a basic understanding of the use of phase diagrams and their use.
- Introduce the basic concepts, theories and methodologies that are required for the analysis of simple deformable structural components.
Thermofluids
The aim of this module is for the student to understand the basic concepts, principles and theoretical approaches of thermodynamics and fluid mechanics and apply them to engineering systems.
Computing
The aim of this module is for the student to understand problem solving and to acquire programming skills in the high level language of MATLAB.
Vehicle Systems and Design
The aims of this module are to:
- Explain the operation of contemporary Vehicle Systems
- Identify the British Standard for Engineering Drawings
- Develop Computer Aided Drawing skills, using Siemens NX
- Introduce structural materials, their application and constraints

The aim of this module is for the student to understand the vehicle design and development process and to understand why the more analytical modules are necessary areas of study for the would-be vehicle designer.

The aims of this module are:
- to enable students to gain competence in the various mathematical techniques used in aeronautical and automotive engineering

Engineering Mechanics
The aim of this module is for the student to be able to break a structure into idealised components and explain how the basic laws of engineering mechanics relating to fundamental static and dynamic systems allow yield forces and moments to inform the design process.
Risk Analysis
The aim of this module is to give students an introduction to current approaches to the analysis and management of risk in the aerospace and automotive industries.
You will start to go into more depth in key automotive subjects such as Vehicle Loading Suspension, Advanced Powertrain Systems, Ground Vehicle Aerodynamics, Electrotechnology, Control engineering, Machine Elements and Automotive Materials and Systems Reliability Assessment.

Structural Design Project
The aims of this module are for the student to have an appreciation of the different philosophies used for manufacturing automotive and aerospace engineering products and components; learn how a computer aided engineering (CAE) environment can be used to facilitate the design of these products. Learn how to select materials based on stiffness, strength and sustainability to undertake the design of a simple aeronautical or automotive structure.

Engineering Mathematics 3
The aim of this module is to cover adequately those mathematical topics which are fundamental to all engineering disciplines. An over-rigorous approach is avoided.
Dynamics and Vibration
The aim of this module is for the student to build on principles of Engineering Mechanics in TTA001 (Statics and Dynamics) to cover central-force motion, dynamics of systems of particles and two-dimensional dynamics of rigid bodies, and also introduce elements of analytical mechanics and vibration of particles and rigid bodies.
Systems Reliability Assessment
The aim of this module is to give students an understanding of system reliability concepts in the aerospace and automotive industries.
Incompressible Aerodynamics
The aims of the module are for the student to be able to describe and apply the physical principles and laws governing the generation of lift and drag on lifting surfaces operating in incompressible flows.
Mechanics of Materials
The aim of this module is for the student to build on the Elasticity module TTA104, to cover the mechanical behaviour of simple beams under bending loads (elementary beam theory) and specifically introduce equations used for calculating bending and shear stresses and bending and shear deflections.
Machine Elements and Automotive Materials
The aim of this module is to provide understanding of the engineering requirements in order to choose appropriate materials and machine elements for designing vehicular subsystems/components.

Ground Vehicle Aerodynamics
The aim of this module is for the student to build on and apply the fundamentals of fluid dynamics learnt in module TTA003 to understand the fundamental concepts and methods applicable to Ground Vehicle Aerodynamics.
Vehicle Loading and Suspensions
The aim of this module is for students to understand the engineering requirements necessary to design road vehicles, with particular focus on vehicle loading and suspension design.
Control Engineering
The aim of this module is for the student to understand the analysis and design of control systems in aeronautical and automotive engineering applications.
Advanced Powertrain Systems
The aim of this module is for the student to understand the design, construction, performance, integration and testing of conventional and low carbon Automotive Powertrain Systems.
Electrotechnology
The aim of this module is to introduce the fundamental principles and concepts of electric circuits.
From the first term you will start to study Vehicle Design and Development. As well as this you will learn engineering fundamentals such as thermodynamics, mechanics, materials and manufacturing.

The aim of this module is to complete the students' education and training in the particular discipline by asking them to tackle a reasonably challenging engineering problem. The problem should involve the student:

The aim of this module is for the student to understand the factors involved in the design decisions and level of development required to define a concept vehicle.

Noise Control
The aim of this module is for the student to understand the fundamentals of acoustics and the application to the design of noise control and mitigation in vehicles, with particular application to the luxury market and growth markets, taking into account sustainable design of communities, legal aspects and planning.
Stress and Structural Analysis
The aim of this module is for the student to build on the theories of structural analysis in TTB204 to cover general static stress analysis for elastic continuum with emphasis on two-dimensional thin plate structures.
Vehicle Dynamics and Simulation
The aim of this module is for the student to understand the principles of dynamic modelling, in the context of the vehicle's vertical (ride) and longitudinal (powertrain) dynamics. Further aims are to consolidate earlier fundamental learning about dynamics, systems and signals, to develop a knowledge of simulation tools and to experience vehicle testing and associated data analysis.
Introduction to Computational Fluid Dynamics
The aim of this module is for students to understand the fundamental principles of CFD and to learn the basic methodologies incorporated in modern commercial CFD packages.
Sensor Fusion for Intelligent Vehicles
The aim of this module is for the students to understand the fundamentals of sensor fusion and their applications to aeronautical and automotive engineering problems.

Finite Element Methods
The aim of this module is for the student:
- To learn how to derive and employ finite element methods to solve stress-strain, steady-state heat flow and vibrational problems.
- To implement these methods computationally using Matlab to allow for static analysis of automotive and aerospace structures
- To introduce the use of the FEM commercial software, MSC Nastran and Patran.
Principles of Composite Materials & Structures
The aim of this module is for the student to understand basic concepts, fundamental principles and some important issues encountered in the analysis and design of advanced fibre-reinforced composite structures.
Crashworthiness
The aim of this module is for the students to understand the principles of vehicle crashworthiness design, in the context of human body protection and crash energy absorption through proper design of restraint systems and proper selection of material and structural forms. In addition, the students must be able to use the fundamentals in human body injuries and mechanism of impact energy management in some practical situations.
Machine Intelligence
The aims of this module are to:
- understand the fundamental and principles of machine intelligence.
- understand their applications to aeronautical and automotive engineering problems.
Battery Technology
The aims of this module are to:
- Enable the student to understand the principle theories and operation of electrified vehicle and aircraft powertrains with a focus on battery technology.
- Further aims are to understand the key developments in this field, establish knowledge in electrochemical processes and gain experience in the operation and performance analysis of batteries.
University Wide Language Programme
This is a 10 credit module from the University-wide language programme.

How you'll be assessed
You are assessed by a mixture of coursework and written examinations, the percentage of which varies from module to module. Design-orientated work is assessed by oral presentations, project work and group assignments. The individual project is assessed by oral and poster presentations and a written report. Digital skills and social media development are encouraged.
Placement year
This course includes the option to complete a paid year working in industry. Our close links with industrial partners enable us to provide our students with considerable help in sourcing and securing their placement.
Placements are an excellent opportunity to gain real-world experience and apply the knowledge from your degree in practice. Many of our students return with a much better understanding of the wider context of the modules they have studied and generally perform better in their final year(s) of study.
In addition, the placement year will allow students to ‘test drive’ an industrial sector. It will give students insight into what they can expect from a graduate position before having to commit to a longer-term career. Placements are a great stepping-stone into a permanent job. We see many of our students return to their placement employer as a graduate because they have demonstrated their worth to the organisation.
Please note that whilst the Department offers great support for students to find a placement, it is ultimately the student's responsibility to source and secure their industrial placement.
Additional award
By undertaking a year on professional placement or working in industry, you will gain an additional award alongside your final qualification. If you undertake a professional placement year you will gain a Diploma in Professional Studies (DPS) or if you complete a year in industry you will gain a Diploma in Industrial Studies (DIS).

Selection
Applicants are usually selected based on their UCAS application, but in exceptional cases, an interview may be required. If applicants are made an offer of a place, they will be invited to visit the department giving them the opportunity to meet staff and students, see facilities and get an insight into what it is like to be a student at Loughborough.
Many of our courses receive a large number of applications for each available place. We cannot unfortunately always make offers to all applicants who are predicted to achieve/have achieved grades in line with our advertised typical offers.
Australia
Typical offers for students from Australia are based on the Australian Tertiary Admissions Rank (ATAR). Typically, we would require a score between 85.00 and 94.00. For students from Queensland, requirements from the Overall Position (OP) would typically be between 8 and 4.

The Certificat d’Enseignement Secondaire Supérieur (CESS) and Diploma van Secundair Onderwijs (DSO) are both acceptable qualifications for direct entry into first year undergraduate courses. We typically require an overall score ranging from 75% to 85%. Where the 20 point marking scale is used, we would typically require marks between 15/20 and 17/20.
Specific subject marks may be required for some courses and where this is the case, this should be studied as a 4-hour subject. Where courses require achievement in GCSE Maths, we would normally look for a score of 50% or higher in Maths within the CESS or DSO.

For students taking the Croatian Matura (Svjedodžba o Maturi), we typically require an average score between 4.0 and 5.0.
Where courses have specific subject requirements, a score of 4 or 5 will normally be required in each. For courses that require Maths as part of their A Level offer, this should be taken at extended level in the Matura.
All students must also achieve the University’s English language requirements.
Cyprus
The Apolytirion is not accepted for direct entry to the University when studied on its own. However, we are happy to consider students taking the Apolytirion alongside either 1 or 2 A Levels. For courses with typical offer requirements of ‘ABB’, we would typically require 19.5 in the Apolytirion alongside an ‘A’ at A Level or 18.0 in the Apolytirion alongside ‘AB’ at A Level. Where courses require specific subjects, these must be taken at A Level.
Where courses require achievement in GCSE Maths, we would normally look for a score of 17 or higher in Maths within the Apolytirion.

For students taking the Bevis for Studentereksamen (STX), typical offers range from 8.0 to 10.5 in the weighted average mark from the STX. Some courses may require marks (either 10 or 12) in specific Level A subjects.
Where courses require achievement in GCSE Maths, we would normally look for a score of 7 or higher in Level C Maths with the STX.
Students who have taken the Studentereksamen under the old grading system would be considered on a case by case basis with an average between 9.0 and 11.0 normally required.

For students taking the Gümnaasiumi lõputunnistus with the Riigieksamitunnistus, we typically require a high average grade between 4.3 and 4.8 in the Gümnaasiumi lõputunnistus as well as an average percentage between 77% and 90% in the Riigieksamitunnistus.
Specific subject marks may be required for some courses. For Engineering and Science courses, we would expect students to have studied Lai Matemaatika.
Students with a score of 4.0 with 70% average from state exams would be considered on a case by case basis for the Loughborough University Foundation Year

European Baccalaureate
For students taking the European Baccalaureate, we typically require an overall average mark between 78% and 88% with specific subject marks (normally 8.0 or higher from a 4 or 5 period subject) required for some courses.

For students taking the Ylioppilastutkinto / Studentexamen, typical offer requirements would normally be based on achievement in best 4 subjects. Offers will typically be expressed as four letter grades ranging from MMMM (achieve Magna cum laude approbatur or higher in four subjects) to LEEE (achieve Eximia cum laude approbatur or higher in four subjects with at least one subject at Laudatur).

France
For students taking the new French Baccalauréat Général (assessed from 2021 onwards), we typically require an overall result between 13.0 – 15.5 with results of 14-15 in two speciality subjects. Specific speciality subjects are required for some courses.
Students following the Option Internationale (OIB) will often receive a slightly lower offer.
Where courses require achievement in GCSE Maths, we would normally look for a score of 10 or higher in Mathematics taken in Year 12 as a Speciality Subject (Première) or a score of 11 or higher in Additional Maths taken as an Option in Year 13 (Terminale).

Greece
Students taking the Greek Apolyterion are normally required to also take the Panhellenic Exams. Typical offers are based on the General Access Grade in the Panhellenics and range from 16.5 to 19.0 depending on the course applied for. Where courses have specific subject requirements, these should be taken as ‘Direction’ subjects within the Panhellenics. Students applying for Science or Engineering courses would generally be expected to have followed the Sciences direction. We will also normally ask for a mark between 17.0 and 19.0 in the Apolyterion certificate.
Students who have studied 1 or 2 A Levels alongside the Apolyterion (without taking the Panhellenic Exams) would normally be required to obtain high grades in their A Level exams along with an average mark of between 17.0 and 19.0 in the Apolyterion. Where courses have specific subject requirements, these should be taken as A Levels.
Students taking a Foundation course alongside the Apolyterion will be considered on a case by case basis.

Typical offers are based on the Standard XII school leaving qualifications. When awarded by CBSE, ISCE or West Bengal Exam Boards, we typically ask for results in the region of 78% - 88% average performance from best 4 subjects. For other state boards, we would be looking for achievement between 83% - 93% from best 4 subjects. Specific subject marks at Standard X or Standard XII may be required for some courses.

For students taking the Maturitetno Spričevalo., we typically require an overall total score of between 22 and 30 out of 34.

Sri Lankan A Levels are considered comparable to the typical A Level requirements. However, as an A* grade cannot be achieved in Sri Lankan A Levels, an A grade is acceptable to meet this requirement where applicable.

Sweden
For students tasking the Avgångsbetyg / Slutbetyg från Gymnasieskola, typical offers are normally based on an average score from 2500 credits with an ‘A’ counting as 20 points, a ‘B’ counting as 17.5 points, a ‘C’ counting as 15 points etc. Typical offers range from 16.0 to 18.8 average from 2500 credits.
Where courses have specific subject requirements, an ‘A’ or ‘B’ grade would normally be required from 2 relevant subject modules within the Slutbetyg.
Students who took the Avgångsbetyg / Slutbetyg från Gymnasieskola under the old grading system are considered on a case by case basis with most courses requiring a majority of ‘VG’ and ‘MVG’ grades.

Switzerland

Where courses require specific subjects, we would be looking for marks between 5.0 and 6.0 in school assessment.

United States of America
For students studying in the American education system, typical offers for entry onto undergraduate level courses are based on obtaining 3.2 in the High School Diploma along with achievement in Advanced Placement Exams or SAT II Subject Specific Tests. We would typically require between ‘4, 4, 4’ and ‘5, 5, 5’ in 3 AP exams or between ‘650, 650, 650’ and ‘750, 700, 700’ in 3 SAT subject tests.
Where courses have an A Level maths requirement, it would be necessary for applicants to achieve a high mark in AP Calculus BC or SAT Math Level 2. For programmes that require achievement in GCSE Maths, we would normally look for a score of ‘570’ or higher in SAT I Math or ACT with a minimum score of 27 overall and 26 in each component.
To satisfy English language requirements, we normally ask for a score of ‘610’ in SAT I Evidence-Based Reading/Writing or ACT with a minimum score of 27 overall and 26 in each component. Some programmes have higher requirements.
Vietnam
